I am interested in a used 1-ton Dodge 4x4 with 24 valve engine to plow snow. Is there a particular year that is stronger, or known to have fewer problems? Thanks. Jerry Henry

I have heard with a late 01-02 model your chances of getting a 53 block are pretty slim. I bought a late 01 and my friend bought an 02 and we both came out good.

I ordered a new 2002 because, being the last of the 2nd generation 24 valve engines, they should be the most debugged. I haven't been disappointed - the truck has never been back to the shop and is still on its original lift pump (16 PSIG idle) and VP-44. No 53 blocks in 2002 trucks.

I would look to be sure it is not a 53 block as mentioned above. I have a later 01 H/O. The more I read about all the newer more powerful engines not getting the mileage the older engines got, I'm starting to think my 245 hp,505 ft lbs and 21 m. p. g might be just about right.

02 HO Oo. Oo. Oo. Original VP and very dependable ;)

Come on RA admit it :-{} , you are CAD-less in Tri-Cities! Not only that, you did not have rear wheel liners, hood liner and other omissions. 2001. 5 wins hands down! :D :D :D

If it was just half a year newer...

:-laf

Knock on wood, I'm at 82K and all is well with the drivetrain. I even forgot to take it out of 4hi a while back when pulling the trailer for 25 miles down the highway and didn't even notice till I saw the dash light!

Seriously though, I think any of the 24v engines with the exception of the 53 blocks would be fine and the 12v ain't bad either.

Very late build 02 for me-- lost my VP at 40K:( Perfect FP all along.

I STILL think the 02 is best. My truck only weighs 6800#, and I don't have the CAD. I also have the super-HD Teksid block (no 5x casting series), good brakes, and 16x8 factory wheels.

That poll is pretty meaningless without population data, extent of modifications, etc. Polling falls under the mathematical discipline of statistics, and there are rigorous requirements that must be met before results can be "taken to the bank".

As an example, the VP-44 on my truck has never failed. Therefore, it is 100% reliable.

I would go back to the posit that the 2002 should have the latest revisions in the lift pump, VP-44, ECM/PCM, etc. and, therefore, should be the most reliable engine (the subject of the original post in this thread). That's why I ordered a 2002, and mine has been completely reliable to date.

The original question was which model year was most desirable in terms of 24 valve engines, not the entire truck, right? ;)

I love my 02. No major problems, no 53 block, and best of all no CAD. I had the worst luck with that on my '95. With my truck now, I don't have to worry about if its going to lock in!

Eric

I thought mu '01. 5 was perfect. Now that it's "totaled" I'm looking for a replacement & those 1/2 year models are hard to find. I might have to settle for an early '01 & move the goodies from my wreck.

No I think has question was what year was the must desirable of the 24V years (98. 5 to 2002). Hands down the answer is 2001. 5 :D :D :D
