You said the block came back very clean. If they dipped it in cleaning fluid the oil galleries will be full of dirt. The dirt will scar your bearings. You will need to clean the oil galleries. This is based on my experience as a beginner shade tree mechanic. It took me a long time to figure why the bearings were scared so soon after I had done a rebuild job.

HA!. that's prolly why my jeep was like that too :) thanks for the tip!

I never put an engine together without washing it thoroughly myself. Some warm, soapy water, various brushes and some clean, lint-free rags will get the job done. I like to dry it with a heat gun when I'm done washing. It seems to get it real dry, and the paint seems to stick better when it's warm.

I don't think the prices were real bad from my local Cummins dealer. Cummins Mid-South here in Jackson. They didn't have everything, but will have it tomorrow. I got everything I will need to put it back together for under a grand. If everything works out I should come in well under budget, and way, way less than the $8000 quoted by the dealer. I'm probably going to have less than 2 grand in it and that includes the used conOFE I got from Olee Poole.

Forgot to mention, Dieselcare in Memphis did the injectors for me. Fixed for under $250. I was very pleased with the price. I decided not to go with performance tips just yet. Maybe later.

you putting studs and an fire ring in it tho right?

Naah, just stock. It's a work truck with no plans for upgrades except maybe a smarty. Probably not even that on this one. Hopefully it will run a lot longer this time. 129k is pretty pathetic.

Got it all back together and it runs great. I'm real impressed with how strong it is. I'm trying to break it in right. I put about ten miles on it and then hooked it to about 7000lbs and towed it 120 miles. I dropped off that trailer and picked up a 25ft dual tandem gooseneck and loaded a 01 QC 4x4 dually on it and towed it back home. I'm not sure how much that weighed, but I'm guessing about 15k. It did great. It would hold 65 and never drop more that 1 or 2 mph on the hills.

It's a lot quieter than I am used to.

Glad you got it back on the road BJ. Might want to change the oil soon now that you've given it a good run. Hopefully you varied RPM as you went, that helps break it in right.

I ran it in 5th some to keep the rpms up and then I would run it in 6th. I think it's going to be good for a while. I'm going to change the oil this weekend. Should have about 500 miles on it by then. I want to cut the filter open and see what's there. I'll get to see how good of a job I did cleaning it up and also see if anything is shedding metal.

Thanks. I hope it stays that way. Is there anyone out there that has done a bunch of these that would be willing to write up some some of the tricks to make it go easier.

A tip. Put a strong magnet on your oil filter for collecting metal particales. I done this to my difs, and transmission too. I started doing this years ago with the oil pan of my vette. Had a couple guys that build cars for the track and run a auto shop on the side, do some work on it. Realized its better on the filter than cleaning the oil pan.
