Hope this is the correct forum, first timer.

Just got done hauling a 30' TT 8500lbs, this past weekend. In the small hills of michigan I could not maintain a constant speed. Even going up small hills I would lose as much as 5mph with wot. This is a stock '99 QC LB 4 wheel drive with an auto. Would appreciate any suggestions either trans or engine. I don't want a wheel smoker just enough power to run 70 down the freeway

Welcome!

There is lots you can do - just read lots here + in the other forums-engine /drive train but I think most agree #1- gauges, then a fuel plate, maybe govenor spring kit, higher flow air filter and transmission upgrades.

Have Fun!

This truck is a 24 valve so a fuel plate won't work. Check with the guys on the 24 Valve Engine and Drivetrain (1998. 5 - 2002) forum for advice on what mods are best for you.

Hey rbricker1... I had the same problem with the little hills in Wyoming, plus the torque converter had began to slip on my '98. 5.

I ordered a DTT valve body and EZ from Bill K. I had my local mechanic service the transmission and he installed the valve body no charge while he was at it. I unstalled the EZ in about 5 minutes and both problems were solved.

I asked basically the same question two years ago, and several thousand dollars later, you can see what I did. (See Signature) Worth every penney of it. I pull a 33' 5er, weighs around 12500lbs loaded. I climb steep hills in 4th gear at around 55. Otherwise, cruise at 65. Could do more, but trying for fuel economy. Got 12mpg last trip. I could do more to my truck, injectors and clutch, but it does well enough as is.

Im willing to be it has 3. 55's. If it had 4. 10's it would have pulled fine. I second what Wyojim said,go with a DTT valve body, and the EZ package they have on their site, its a bargain, and it wil solve your problems.

Get a Base Line

First of all, I would get some gauges and get a base line for your stock engine and make sure all is well. (fuel press. within specs and monitor boost) I don't know what kind of hills you are talking about but when mine was stock pulling a 30' TT, if I went to WOT I would gain speed uphills (north Ga. not Fl. LOL) Usually I could just get it to unlock and make the hill.

That said, the DTT vb and the Edge Comp have given me plenty of towing power and alot of fun empty around town.

Hope this helps and WELCOME aboard

Tom

Got about the same rig--just a little heavier(33. 5 5th). Found on my first trip that those hills in PA. were steep--but she just lugged down to 45 mph and refused to go lower. Just got my gauges and such in and ordered the EZ box... see about the next trip!! R, J. B. ;)

Definitely EZ and gauges is the way to go. When I first got my 2001 I had the same problem traveling in head wins. Now there is no problem what so ever.
