I guess the key wording is that in general, the regulation would require owners to reduce emissions by upgrading existing vehicles. Either by retrofitting, engine change-out or vehicle replacement.

Well, yea. That too. But my bet is that "as California goes, so goes the nation" eventually anyways. Besides, unlike some states, we still keep marriage between a man and a woman, so we aren't all that bad. Oh, also we don't elect an insane man to be governor. Ha! Cheers!

It looks like it's too late for pubic comment on this particular rule. I remember posts about this very thing at least a year ago encouraging Californians to attend the hearings but I guess not enough of you folks attended

When CARB proposes rules they put it to public comment for a period of time, then make a decision, then put it into law. Looks like this one is pretty well wrapped up:

In-Use On-Road Diesel-Fueled Heavy-Duty Drayage Trucks

Next on the CARB docket is OFF-road diesels, you have a chance to fight this one. Public comment ends January Subject Top Page: IN-USE OFF-ROAD DIESEL-FUELED FLEETS

I would STRONGLY suggest you folks in Kommyforny get really familiar with this website and keep on top of what these guys are up to. Especially the rulemaking process and what is on the schedule for adoption. Doesn't look like they miss much, they're pasting rules on about anything you can think of.

Welcome to the California Air Resources Board

Dude not going to argue... . However if you have ANY thing other than a regular bed, you have to "declare" you max weight ever. This means that you have to decide what your truck combined with your old ladies horse trailer weighs and you better have the 10K or 15K or 20 K sticker. Now yes if you have a 1 ton with 30K sticker i guess mr CHP might have an issue. In reality though based on experience Mr CHP is concerned more with the fact that you have either no sticker OR you have 30K sticker and weigh 31 K.

I simply began this thread to try and spark some interest. If we all just sit with our thumb up our bu$%... guess what happens. Come on guys... . This is happening and is going to continue and affect EVERYONE. These eviromental bug huggers are spending 10 dollars to save 2. This is bullsh$#%. We all need to unite and not put up with it. This is affecting all business owners and it is and will hit the consumers... and its going to hit the private joe trying to muck through life.

so put a regular bed on it! you're playing chicken little implying that everybody that owns a 3/4-1 ton diesel is going to have to spend $20k on it to keep it on the road, and this is false.

sorry, my friend, but you can't fight city hall in CA... flatbed trucks have been considered commercial in CA for a LONG time. They're focusing on commercial vehicles here. If you want to run a small business in CA, you have to play by CA's communist rules. You can either adapt or or head for greener pastures :)

Interest piqued, absolutely. My company is fighting draconian CARB emmssions rules on the marine side, with very little success, and we've had some heavy hitters involved. One point worth noting is that the real drivers behind all of this are Federal EPA air quality guidelines which are tied to federal funding. That's how the feds do it, comply or we take away the golden goose. I envy the states that have put themselves in a position to tell the feds to pound sand. CA, especially LA basin, routinely approaches the limits and occasionally goes over them. I also suspect NV and AZ fingerprints, actively or passively, on this because so much CA pollution blows into those states. The various posts that say this is not going away have it right. If I am not mistaken the new CARB reg also applies or will apply to all diesel trucks, regardless of state registration, that do business in the state. All we can do is hope they don't go after our 3500's.

Forrest... ... dude YOU ARE MISSEN THE FU@#$%$ POINT... ... . LIKE I SAID 3 TIMES NOT TRYEN TO START A PISSEN MATCH... . GUESS THATS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKEN FOR THOUGH..... READ WHAT I WROTE..... JESUS. JUST SAYEN WE ALL OUGHT TO PAY ATTENTION NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE... OR WHAT YOU DRIVE. ITS COMEING WHEATHER YOU THINK SO OR NOT. . I AM NOT JUST TALKEN ABOUT BUSINESS OWNERS. EVEN IF I WAS... . IN THIS ECONOMY... . ITS GOING TO AFFECT ALL OF US WEATHER YOUR IN NEW YORK OR CA. I RUN A BUSINESS. . AND A REGULAR BED JUST WONT WORK... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

I agree,we should do something about it before they take away what is ours. Another option when the feds do walk over us is to,remember trying to smog older cars, you want your weber carb, hedders, intake, ignition, etc. ,the cars ran cleaner, better gas mileage, better emissons, when its time for a smog check you take that stuff off,put back on the smog crap and have it inspected,we used to share smog parts for the test then change it back.

So if they do go after our trucks,a group of people can buy the equipment together, and share it for the test, why not?

wow, you act like the socialistic direction of this nation is something new... just what do you suggest?

writing the CARB and saying "please don't clean up the air, I own a small business!" isn't going to do squat.

I'm not trying to turn the milk in your cheerios yellow, but welcome to the world we live in.

my eyes have been open for a long time, and I've been doing what I can to adapt and skirt opressive regulations. like I said, you can't fight city hall... at least... I haven't heard a detailed outline on how.

if a regular bed just won't work and you need a truck for your business, I would probably post your truck up for sale on the forums, sell it, and buy a compliant truck.

We have a large fleet of diesel lifts at my job and am working from a spreadsheet with year and horsepower of vehicle. adding DPF will change PM but not nox. most of my stuff has PM issues. My 970 cat loader will need a DPF to make the PM count. No DPF's are yet available for my lifts as yet since the manufacturers keep waiting on CARB to settle on specs. And with the economy down, many businesses will not be able to afford these updates and will either run until caught or close up. Not to mention people who are trying to run trans oil for fuel. trans oil is RED and IF you get dipped, the fuel would come out red signifying to the inspector it is AG diesel and will slap you with a fine so big it will make your head spin. This has happened to a couple of outfits here already.

oh I understand, it's disgusting what they're doing... they're ripping apart the fabric of America. The people at the helm are either evil or retarded and their followers are just pitiful

We all want to breathe cleaner air. This scheme just needs to be delayed a couple of years until the economy improves. The independents need some financial cushion too. They can't just tack a surcharge onto their rates the way the big trucking companies can. A lot of the independents would probably love to buy newer rigs as their oldies are killing them on breakdowns, but hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent now isn't going to cut it. Like a lot of things,it's all in the timing.

Just a not on requiring smog modification. Yeas ago and I won't say how long. I remember when it was required to plug the crankcase draft tube. The put on a new oil filler cap and hose and had a pcv ran to the air filter housing. All so the smoke, fumes, etc. vented front he crankcase was burned again by the engine. This was required to be retrofitted on all gas engines before it could be registered. Bottom line at least in Calif. they have making this kind of thing mandatory for a long time and see no reason why they would not do the same on diesels or anything else for that matter as they see fit.

I agree by not saying anything for so long and US letting them and other government get away with this stuff. They now can do anything they want and they don't care because we will not do anything!!!! Only way to turn the tide is hold them accountable when election time comes. Voice your concern and if they don't listen hold then accountable and vote them OUT. Problem nobody seems to be willing to do this very simple thing!!!

Sorry we are doing it to ourselves there is just not enough people that will pay attention and take action. You get what the results of inaction get you. You have heard the saying and it sure applies to public servants. Power Corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely.

Oh I don't consider myself Republican or Democratic; Conservative or Liberal. Just 100% a free American and proud of it. I investigate their records, vote out or in, those I feel understand they represent me a US Citizen and America. Their own self interest has NO business in there decisions, Government is not a charity, or a welfare organization!!! Just perhaps if we ALL started not giving away our right and stopped being greedy as Citizens things would change. Example if your Senator adds pork to a bill bringing money and jobs to your state your all for it the heck if it is ridicules like a bridge to now where. It all is greed and we all need to start paying attention to what is the right thing for America as a whole. It has to hold true for City, County, State, or Federal Government. We ALL got us here and we can all get us out of it but it takes ALL of us to do it.

Ok off soap box!!!!

I agree. You my friend, are the part of the problem. Your childish, juvenile behavior is the reason diesels have a bad name, the reason why the government is after us. Living "free" (which we are not) requires responsibility and that is not responsible behavior. If people like you where more concerned about what the government is doing than being "cool", the country might not be is such a mess now.

I have spend quite a bit of money trying to get my truck smokeless, which is basically impossible with Smarty:mad:, so people won't think I'm some jack ***** red neck.

I don't know if CARB knows what the real implications of these proposals will be. Like was mentioned above, they have done this type of think before. People moaned and groaned and say all the world will stop but people adapted. But this time it will have a real impact. It might be that when the EPA sees the real cost and lost of business, etc. , they may find it can't be done nationally. Plus if it is purposed nationally, there will be lot larger voice of opposition with real data from California. Maybe, this happening Cali will help it not happen else where. You people is Cali need to consider voting with your feet. I know it is difficult, but if you fall under these rules, the best statement of opposition is take your business elsewhere. One thing is for sure, nothing will happen to stop this if we don't do anything.

There are many smaller companies that are already hurting that will likely go under with help from these requirements. If you think you are safe because you live in a "flyover" state, you are wrong. Between CA on the west and MA and NY on the east, the CARBs of the world have the rest of us in a pincer move. The craziness that rolls out of California is staggering. I saw an article the other day. They just passed a law banning . 50 caliber ammo because you can "shoot helicopters from the sky". Of course, . 50 caliber guns are already banned. Luckily, you could never shoot a helicopter from the sky with a . 30 caliber. Ask anyone who was in Viet Nam!

Sorry for the rant. California drives me nuts!#@$%!
