well

The company I work for has INSITE I havent done it yet but im gonna I can fax you guys copies of my info so your steeler can look at them and find out wear to go you must use INSITE and you connect inside the cab there are two ways to do the mod the most easy way described above and a more involved way that uses your "coast"/"resume" switches for cruse another neet thing I have found out is that you can wire your exhaust brake to work with your cruse control you program the ecm for a max MPH over set cruse MPH and when the speed reaches the max set the exhaust brake will activate (the only down fall I see is only 1 max speed)this feature would only work in cruse and I believe you could still use the E brake the normal way O YEA and im gonna have the guys at work set my max cruse speed at the max value(cant set mine over 90mph)O well Im gonna try? the info that I have is called "Cummins ISB guide for body builders" its about 75 pages I can fax them BUT I would rather fax em to some one who could post them on the web for all to view and print ANY takers??????? I will be gone for the rest of the week so I will check in later!

MARK

You are correct about the switching.

The pto has to be enabled AND

the speed ranges have to be programed

Im thinking

1-1000rpm

2-1200rpm

3-1300rpm

4-1400

5-1500

any one have any thoughts on what speeds to have set???

from what the guys at work said

the soft wear is about 4000$(????)how much truth to this I dont know(I didnt see the PO)I can probly get a copy but they said it uses a 1 time only password to activate (that you have to call cummins for)SO if any of you guys can HACK the soft wear I would be glad to try to get a copy of it?????

The INLINE II Adapter Kit is about $800-900, and the software subscription is $400/year. I may have some time at the end of the day today to play with it, I'll post later! :D

Directions for the simple-minded

Just to make sure, is this correct?

1. Go to store and get togle switch.

2. Install switch in location that floats my boat.

3. Wire 1 pole of switch to ground.

4. Wire other pole of switch through fire wall to orange PTO wire in engine compartment.

5. Go to stealer/Cummins. Have them enable PTO and set 5 RPM settings.

6. :D  because I will have a warmer truck this winter.

Is that the bottom line of this?

Scott

Ok, you guys are beginning to lose me here. Mine works with +12VDC, and some of you are getting it to work by going to ground? I tried that and all I got was sparks! This is really beginning to get interesting. Keep going guys, this is almost getting fun... yea right .

Not sure where they plugged into my truck, but I'm almost willing to bet it was into the diagnostic port under the dash, but I wouldn't stake my life on it.

Where to find INSITE... Any freightliner / kenworth dealership has insite. The only problem is finding an adapter to hook into the truck. Most dealerships only have the INLINE I adapter kit for older rigs, our trucks require the INLINE II kit and dodge specific connector.

Evan, that price sounds a WHOLE LOT more reasonable. Gotta use it a lot for it to pay for itself.

Ok. Here's how I see this. Someone has posted the specs from the Cummins website on how the PTO function is designed to work on the CUMMINS ECM. The problem is, we don't have a CUMMINS ECM. Pin B46 is the number 46 pin on the "B" connector. We only have one 50-pin connector on our ECM. Not two. So using the Cummins site as an instruction manual for how to make our ECM's behave is not such a hot idea. There are some really cool features that would be nice to have, but the DC calibration for this ECM just doesn't have them.

I would have to stick with Giz on how this thing works. Put 12 volts on the PTO wire and you get the PTO speed. Don't ground it (remember, we don't have a Cummins ECM). One speed. Not five (as nice as that would be). I don't think Chrysler saw any need for five selectable speeds. Hence, we probably don't have that option. But the option still needs to be prgrammed and enabled. I am going to my dealer today for this and other things, so I will post what I find out when I'm done.

BTW, I called Cummins on this thing. Insite subscription is about $400 a year (I was told $325). The adapter harness to go to our (my) plugs is $62. That part will allow your local Cummins guy to connect thier Insite unit to our (my) trucks. I had the part number for the kit, but left it at home. When I get back from the dealership, I will post that too.

i got luckey enough, the tech school Pennslyvania college of tech. (where i go to school and am majoring in diesel technology) just happens to have a laptop with the cummins insite program loaded on it and the program is updated every year or so. talked to my fuel injection teacher about that. were gonna hook it up in a few weeks when we get to that part of the chapter. does anybody know if cummins has a password on the ecm when you hook it up. guess we'll see what happens. Oo.

Are there any alternatives to this? I understand the throttle is electronic, does that mean there's not a cable anywhere?

Reason being is I'm looking to install an onboard welder, and output amperage is determined by RPMs, IE alternator output. While a high idle would be great, I may need less than all out at different times.

Bryan

Yes. There is a throttle cable. It goes from your pedal to the TTPS on the engine. It's right under the black cover above the fuel pump.

Looking good, but the confusion is starting to set in,..... +12v, ground,. . cummins vs DC ECM,..... not to mention the dealers/techs/ and the programming comments. . One good thing, there's apparently some very knowledgeable people here, we just have to get this sorted out, a bit. And apparently there's quite a discrepancy with the "stealer's" technicians, and knowledge. Good and bad, but is there going to be a detailed solution, even if it costs me a trip to the dealer... we still have to have an explanation(to the dealer) why we need the idle turned up, right?

Sorry this is so late guys.

Well, my trip to my dealer was a bust. Sort of. I finally got them to enable my cold weather idle function in my ECM (TSB 18-019-01). Had it re-flashed last year, but the tech didn't know to enable it after the reflash (no thanks to STAR). So this winter, should be a go as far as that is concerned for me. Yippee!!!:D

Second, I got my PCM re-programmed for my larger tires. Although, 265/75 R-16 are not one of the choices in the scan tool for this PCM. Only the 245/75 R16's are available. So we had to shoot from the hip to get it to work right. So far it seems to be pretty close for my truck. There is a way to program the tire size into your truck whatever your size may be. You have to know the revolutions per mile of your tire and the number of teeth on the tone ring in your differential. That is kinda hard because we had a hard time finding how many teeth were on my tone ring. Not to mention, we couldn't enter the revolutions per mile of my tires (it was outside of the allowed parameters). So we shot from the hip to get as close as we could. Like I said, it seems to be pretty close.

Finally to the issue at hand. The PTO idle. We couldn't find that option anywhere. None of the technical literature had any information on it. None, and I mean not one, of the menus on the DRB scan tool had any listing for PTO of any sort for my ECM. We looked at every menu available on the scan tool looking for this feature and it just wasn't there. This leads me to think that there must be a reflash of the software for my ECM in order to get this function to work. However, I had the latest reflash in my truck for my year. So it seems that I will be waiting on DC to TSB this so that I can get it done (oh joy. ). Remember, mine is a '99 and may not have that function programmed into the ECM. The newer ECM's may.

One note of good news, the technician is heading to DC tomorrow to go to school for some yearly training. He is going to bring this issue up to them and see what DC has to say about the whole thing. Not to mention, they are going to write up a fax to STAR to talk to thier special source there to see if they can get a good answer to this. I will give them a call next week to see how things turn out. When I find out what the skinny is, I'll let you guys know.

I want to take this opportunity to recognize my superior dealership and acknowledge everything they've done for me. Chrysler Winona (1-800-211-5950) IS the standard by which all other dealerships should be measured. I'm not kidding. These guys are the greatest, bar none! They are a 25 mile trip one way (or 45 if I leave from work). And it is worth every inch. I would rather drive there for a lug nut, than deal with the guys in LaCrosse.

Hope this gives you guys some indication of what we're up against.

BTW-the literature that was there did have the PTO input being 12v. I'm guessing that this is exclusive to the DC ECM and that the Cummins ECM may use a grounded input instead.

the computer that GIZMO 007's truck was hooked to was the MDS (mopar diagnostic system) much more powerful than the drb3, and always connected to DC;s computers.

^^

Wanted to get this ttt to see if any new news on the subject..... mine dont work either way but Cental Motive Power in Denver has Insite... maybe the RMTDR can "hook-up" with them and also do some "testing" for us.

The treatment that I got from the visit last Sat was GREAT - info/pizza/drink/discounted prices/etc. They have an office in Albq (around the corner from work) and they might have the Insite also.

Need to ck with my dealer also, but if the DRB wont do it... ... . hmmmmm

Great idea Ben!! Funny thing, I thought of CMP today also. If no one else talks to them this weekend, I will call them Monday morning and see what I can find out.

I used a phillips screwdriver last winter!!;) Had the TSB done but I don't think it was ever enabled. Can't decide if I should have it done again or not. I really hate going to the dealers. Where do they get these service advisors anyway. When I asked about the cold idle feature you would have thought I was speaking in Greek!!

I guess I will keep using my screwdriver for now. Hopefully a solution is found soon. I'm in for sure!!!:D

jman

P. S. I'm interesed in the RMTDR, could someone hook me up. PM me with any info, please. Oo. Oo.

Yup, I know about our local dealer. . ". DUH. . what's that?... ... . supposed tech". . , I'm going to wait a bit, until this thread resolves a bit, maybe we can get DC's attention, and a clear answer.
