Hello all. I live in California and am subjected to bi-annual smog inspection therefor I have to leave all emissions equipment in place and functioning. I don't want to swap stuff out every 2 years for inspection. I was looking to get some input on how to increase power and run clean, hear what has worked for other people. I see a lot of how to do it with deletes but not a whole lot on how to do it and stay legal. Thanks:cool:

imho do it all or don't change anything. The system is very complex and it all must function together to stay operational.None of the programers have shops that will work on your truck WHEN, not if you have issues.Even the oem's will have to update software and at times parts to fix new found issues from the many different duty cycles we put our trucks through.

I had a 2010 and used a Smarty Jr. These new trucks computers keep track of the down loads so when the dealer hooks up and they read the ECU they know you have fooled with it. If you download the stock program to take it to the dealer and then change it back when you get it back it keeps track every time. If the dealer has only 5 upgrades logged and you have 25 downloads ( red flag ) you just became your own warranty. These "chips Manufactures" do not tell you how the Ram is getting smarter. On my 2014 it is stock and will stay that way. There is enough power to pull a house and the 68R will suffer if you play or tow on the higher setting. IMHO

If you play you pay, as we say it here in TDR. If your under warranty, leave it alone. There is plenty of power in the stock form, if your not having problems, leave it alone. The fines are steep here in Comifornia, although I've never personally heard of it, as well as the cost of having to reinstall the controls.

dcs1968. The other posters are giving you good advice. An well maintained emissions intact stock '07.7 to '12 CTD
can be just fine and do what it is supposed to do. My first tow up the Gorman pass convinced me that I have plenty
of truck. Learning more from the TDR pointed to how the Blue-tec system definitely is no good. The talk about
voiding warranty and system damage not to mention EPA fines persuaded me not to go the full delete route.
Actually, modified driving cycles keeps the overhead Regeneration Required prompts from coming on.
For me, I really like the idea of more grunt for towing. I took a risk by installing a PPE Exelerator tuner.
The power upgrade was sure plenty alright and hot rodding could toast the stock transmission. So I kept
a light right foot. The truck handled so much better in city traffic. Got a lot more clatter and no mileage gains though.
Once after a dealer recall ecm flash, the service adviser said the tech wanted to ask me something but changed
his mind. Close call. I think that PPE is more suited for GM Duramax. The program kept coming up as a 5.9.
Found a Banks Automind 66108 a few years later that was emissions intact friendly and also had a CARB EO sticker.
Much better. The transmission could still be toasted if you hot rod but clatter subsided and surprisingly, mileage improved
for the first time. Another thing is that this years' smog check passed with OBDII plugged in without returning to the stock
tune first! I know that the stock transmission is the weak link and I am watching it closely. The last 4000 mile trip towing through the
Plains states including the Big Horn mts and Southern Rockies showed no TQ converter slippage even with 22 lbs boost
in 6th at 70 mph up long slight grades. So far so good. I have plans if and when needed to upgrade the transmission with a better TQ
converter and shift kit by Mike at Inglewood Transmission Services. The power upgrade was for me a want and not a need and
that included a risk. My truck is driven as a DD, a GG, machine shop truck, and towing. Everything. I feel it's the best darn running
emissions intact '08 on the planet! I would like to hear more posts from others and what they do to keep their CTD,s running so
well too! Running emissions intact can't be all bad.

If you have never have seen the soot through the EGR system, then you'd think everything is OK. I'd love to delete and chip my out of warranty C&C 6.7, but it's not worth the risk in Comifornia.

RVTRKN. Amen! Isn't that the truth. Who knows when that nasty soot thing will spoil my fun.
It's a given. But until then, Whippie!

I wanted more power so I traded in my 2011 on a new 2016. Going from 650# of torque to 900# plus all the other improvements and refinements made it very worthwhile.
I too was looking at programmers for my 2011 which was just at 100K so warranty was done....almost everyone was saying deletes deletes deletes. I'm not in emissions testing area yet but its coming to my county someday I'm sure.

The only thing that I can think of is something from Banks Power. Com. This is a Gale Banks company and they claims that their products are 50 State legal. I have no experience with this company but this is the only thing I can think of. Banks products tend to be pricey for what you get!

Jim W. I only bought one thing from Banks and that was the Automind 66108. Retails for around $369.00.
Advertised gains on paper were 85 HP and 235 ft/lbs TQ at the wheels. The stock '08 ctd pickup is 350 HP and 650 ft/lbs TQ at
the crank. Adding together would be 435 HP and 885 TQ. I would say it is actually about 400 HP and 800 TQ on paper.
I only use the max setting for DD and tow tune. There are other levels such as economy and mid power. I haven't tried any
of those. There is a place where I occasionally feel out the torque to know it's still there. Down in Orange County at the SB 5 and
the EB 91 transition. The ramp inclines up to the top, then turns left and then downhill to the EB 91. When traffic is clear, I start the ramp
at the bottom at 65mph and ease the pedal to stay in 6th gear and hit 90mph at the top, then the engine brake slows me down to
the flow of traffic to merge. One time, traffic was clear but I was not thinking of running it when a Ford Powerstroke 4wd quickly passed me
when I was doing 65. I bet he was thinking the same as me. a favorite place to run it up. Again I gave the pedal enough not to down shift and
then gave it more until reaching the top of the ramp where I wound up next to the Ford. I did glance at the speedometer and it was flickering
at 110mph. I backed off and the EB slowed me down into the traffic but the Ford kept on barreling on and disappeared into the traffic
far ahead. That was the first and last time I'll do that again. Not since my '71 Cuda days giving me those young street hungry memories.
Towing is a little more subtle. One time running stock going up the Gorman pass toward LA, a tree hugger moved into my lane right in front of me. I hit the
brakes and moved over and it took a little time to resume 65 mph again. This happened again another time but the Banks tow tune was on. The recovery
back to 65mph was a lot quicker.

I want to thank everyone for their input. I will probably keep my mods to other areas of the truck(suspension, LED lights,etc...). I threw this question out there to see if people are able to increase the power level and still remain emissions compliant. I know you can make massive power with deletes but how about with all equipment in tack?

From what I found, this isn't California legal.

On another note, I can't imagine going 110 in this state! (I don't think we have any speed limit over 70, not to say that I don't ever go over that.) I would too let the "Ferd" get the ticket. Man the speeding tickets have gone over the top in this state. (My daughter got one for five miles over the speed limit, and it cost $300--sorry, not the focus of this thread.)

Look at the "Truck Edition" power module. This is a company that started in the agriculture industry by making power modules for tractors, combines and the like. They now offer modules for the big rigs and med duty trucks like our Rams.
There is no reprogramming with this module, but this unit is plugged into the electrical system and is supposed to optimize all parameters for making more power. Not sure it is legal for use in California.
I only ever ran into one person using this unit. He was a guy from Florida who was pulling a 5th wheel about 14,000#. He had nothing but praise for the unit that he was running on a 2011 ram 3500. I think the unit had 3 setting, stock and 3 power settings.
