How many are trying to drive for economy now????

06' Dodge Truck

A while back there was a post linking to some sound files of Detroit 2-cycles.

I've tried searching for it, without luck. :{ Did anyone save that one?

Thanks.

I've been trying to find them again, also. Had them in my "favorites" list, but had to do some computer work, and they were lost.

Haven't been able to find, doing a web search.

I have a hard time imagining anyone wanted to listen to one of those things. I spent hours with a 6/71 screaming in the engine room of the fish boat I had. Enuff is enuff.

Reminds me of an old saying - "A 2-cycle Detroit Diesel is one of the most efficient devices known to man for turning #2 diesel fuel into noise and smoke. "

Rusty

I think the jist of the saying was that it's efficient at making noise and smoke - not so efficient at making horsepower and torque. :-laf

Rusty

Sorry...

Kind of like a auto wreck. :p You just have to look (listen).

Keeps me happy that I have a Cummins (VW) 4-cycle, not a Detroit 2-cycle. :-laf

What kind of RPM's are these things turning? Sounds like 10k!

It's a two cycle so the aggravating thing hits every time a piston comes up. Just to make sure you can hear it, the blower is screaming too. The best RPM to run them at is easy to tell. Your teeth itch from the noise.

I always loved them Detroit 2-cycles. I drove an International semi with a 6v92ta and a 13 speed roadranger for a while, I loved that truck and the sound... ... ... ... . WHAT???... ... ... ... ... ..... WHAT WAS THAT????... ... ... ... ..... I think dinner is ready.

I owned a truck with a 318 and a 13 speed.

After that I had a Mack with a 300 and 5 speed.

Compared to the D. D. , this was like being in a limo. :{

ah the old detroit. the only diesel that could be started cold and go right to max rpm.

used to do it all the time on water pumps and air compressors. hearing protection was mandatory.

My dad used to drive an old Freightliner cabover with an 8V92 detroit with a turbo on it. I think he was cussed out by every truck driver that had 425 cats and 400 big cam cummins. That thing would run quite well. The guys that ran 50 states with nice new KW's and Pete's would say on the radio "There goes that old Double R truck, we won't be able to run with him" :-laf

Last summer that truck sold at a farm auction-it was still sitting in the same spot my dad parked it. It only brought $300. 00. I would have bought it if I had been there. Funny thing, dad did not bid on it ;) . Ironically the truck number was 13. Old lucky number 13.

mine needs it's rack adjusted, around 2100 it sometimes wants to linger there or higher when I let off of it. But it always runs, no matter how long it sits or how cold or whatever it always lights off,the grille shutters close and it settles into a 450rpm idle and starts leaking ,come up w/a 250-300 hp ISC w/rdrngr and I'll swap, you can have all these gears and all this noise. I just want to get there.

In the movie Black Dog, the guy says that the truck has a 3406 Cat in it, but on the website Nick gave us, they say it has a Detroit in it. OOPS!

how can you not love the sound of a properly tuned DD 2 cycle green grenade... at school, we have/had a 6v92 turbo with DDEC controls in the engine dyno booth... sure does sound awsome under load... i still someday want to have a "toy" of a truck with a DDC 2 cycle in it... [maybe a turbo'd 8v53 with turbo pistons out of a 453t]

My dad had a '69 Brockway COE with a 6-71 Detroit and a 10 spd roadranger. That was an "over the road" truck back then. Needless to say it was a turd but undoubtedly got the job done.

Driptroit

My old man says it sounds like a bag of hammers wantin' to blow up! I love the two stroke sound, i've got one in a allis dozer 3-71. Talk about a screamin' weanie. :-laf

In 1974 my Mom's shop (Delaney and Alph Diesel Service in Bakersfield, CA) built the Super Boss, the Bandag Bandit was built in '78

On it's first pass the Super Boss turned a 14. 0 before it turned the drive shaft into a pretzel doing a burn out at Ontario Motor Speedway in 1975.

Powered by a 12V71/ Allison AT, it looked more like a funny car than a truck#ad
