Where can I find laws about diesel exhaust systems? What is the law about catalytic converters, mufflers, and where the exhaust needs to exit? Would this be a state law or would it be EPA?

Check your owner's manual. Cat is federal. Noise regs are federal. Noise includes other stuff like air cleaner, not just exhaust. Noise is for 3500s, over 10,000 gvw.

OOPS!

Yep, the sticker on my truck (as I recall) basically says that any changes I might make that affect noise or emissions are a violation of Federal law.

Getting paronoid are we????

Absolutely not. Everyone around is doing stacks... . so I want to be a little different. Just trying to see what I can get away with.

So look in the owners manual? I know cats are illegal to take off of gassers but does that apply to diesels? I thought diesels were exempt from some of the gasser exhaust regs.

If the vehicle came from the factory with a CAT leagally it cannot be removed.

Alright what can a police officer give me a ticket for? I can stay away from DOT officers. They are the only ones that can give tickets for cat and muffler violations, right? Police officers can only give tickets for noise, right?

If the CAT developed a malfunction that somehow all the media ( guts ) were somehow blown through it and it was still installed- would be very hard to tell from looking at the outside of the system. It can develop that malfunction easy when removed from the vehicle for a short trip to the shop. :D

Gutted cats are the safest way to break the law. Ive only had to do it once and it was a gasser. I fixed it when money allowed. Cats arent cheap.

On diesels the cats tend to clog and create more of a problem than they solve. After 50k they are pretty much useless anyways. On the fords they have a factory cat delete kit so that you can test the truck without one when diagnosing a runability problem. A lot of guys forget to put the cat back on.

There is a local officer that writes tickets for exhaust. I have glass packs on my 01 grand prix and banks monster on my truck. I asked him if I was looking for a ticket and he said he would look the other way. At least for a while. Then he told me my windows were too dark. He wrote me a ticket for the tint on the grand prix and threatened to write me a ticket on my truck. The thing is the truck is so close to legal that it would almost pass. The law is 70% of light must pass through on the drivers window and the back window cant be darker than 50%. 70% is a joke you actually cant see it unless you look for it. I had 4% on my grand prix , meaning it blocked 96% of light. It was too dark to see out of during the day so I was gonna have it removed anyways. I had only owned the car for 1 day. He is not the kind of guy to cut anyone some slack. Actually wrote up his own brother once.

He likes to write the ricers up with the coffee can exhausts, and I appreciate that. He also nails the harleys though and I dont agree so much with that one. The noise has saved two bikers from me accidently hitting them in the last few years so I agree it is a safety device. I cant believe that we have these lower 48ers ordinances up here in AK.

While still a student at Purdue. I was driving home from class one day, and saw a friend that was pulled over by a county deputy. As I slowed for the stop sign where he was pulled over, I see him yelling at the officer and pointing at me, so I just looked back and laughed. I was sure to blow some smoke as I pulled away from the sign. When I talked to him later that day, I found out that he had gotten pulled over for loud exhaust, he drives a 96 S-10 with the 4. 3 V-6, all that is done to it is removed the muffler, but the cat is still on it, so it is still relatively quiet. When he saw me coming down through there, he was obviously disgruntled, and pointed at me and said "I suppose my truck is louder than that SOB", the officers reply "I'll get him next time". I drove by that cop every day on the way home from class, he sat in the same spot and watched the stop sign. He didnt pull me over. Just more proof that the sound of a 5 speed straight piped cummins makes even cops happy!! (Most chicks dig it too, you wouldnt believe what I have gotten for a "Ride" in the Dodge)
