The big give away for VW was the fact they were meeting standards sans SCR. Nobody else has been able to do that for years. Heck, GM pushed the release back on the Cruz twice and Mazda is 4 years overdue on a promise to bring the sky active diesel to the states. So for VW to supposedly do so with a lean NOx trap was very suspect for those involved.
 
I read where the diesel take rate on Ram HD trucks are somewhere around 80%, I think it's safe to say Ram definitely needs Cummins but losing Ram would barely be a blip on the radar for Cummins.

In 2009, Chrysler accounted for 8% of Cummins' revenue. That's the most recent data I've been able to find so far, but I'll do some more searching. That was during an automotive sales slump - with the growth of truck sales, and the slower industrial economy internationally, I daresay that percentage may be higher today.

8% is alot higher than I would have ever guessed given Cummins has such a broad global clientele and Ram is strictly a NA venture. Very interesting.

My 2015 Jetta TDI has SCR and uses DEF.........

Which (supposedly) can be fixed with a reflash. The EA189 engines which incorporate the lean nox trap aren't even in the ball park and will almost certainly meet the crusher.

The supposedly still hasn't happened yet......:mad: It's a good little car but at this point in time, per VWOA, there is no fix yet nor will they give you any timeline for the fix. I just filled out all the online paperwork for a buyback, supposedly (there's that word again) to happen next month. Would love to keep it but VW won't tell us anything about a fix, and what will happen to mileage and performance so......it's time to move on. The buyback dollars are quite generous so keeping it and hoping for a fix with no downsides doesn't make much sense.

The faulty SCR on the ram trucks performs fine and meets the emissions requirements.....it just isn't lasting long enough.

Good point, but I bet the oldest system out there ain't old enough yet. Class 8 Arvin Meritor non SCR DPFs have a ~5000 hour service interval to test/ replace.

My wife owns a 2011Jetta TDI, we have opted for the fix, hope it never comes. This way the car can still do 50 MPG on the highway and we don't have to do emission testing in Illinois for diesel trucks and cars. The car runs great just as it is, the wife does not want to give up her car so we're going to keep the TDI. As far as I'm concerned we are money ahead if VW gives us the cash when and if they fix the car?

Do not get it flashed! Mpg will drop .... its like a tax increase for the state.. power will fall too...

Exactly.........That why I'm kickin' the Jetta to the curb. The predictions for the fix are less mileage and performance and with bi-annual inspections here in Northern Mexico, I can't avoid the fix......:mad:

That and almost $7000 for my troubles.......It's going....it's just a car.:D

Diesel used to be the most expensive fuel at all stations. I've seen it as low as regular. Because there is less demand. Hope the stations don't stop stocking it

It was right on par with regular here during the summer also, sometimes a little more sometimes less.

In the recent weeks it has slowly been increasing. Demand (and price) always increase during the cold months around here.

Historically (before the VW fiasco) diesel was typically more expensive than ultra premium.

Yes, it will go up in winter. Higher demand for hydrocarboms..... and expense of changing fuel blends will cause them to pass the costs along. Much more stable down here in South Florida. We don't get winter blend down or diesel#1 here
