Does that mean that if I can legally have a handgun in Nevada and am going to somewhere else where I can legally own a handgun, I can legally drive through Cook County (Chicago) even though it is illegal for me to have a handgun there? I wish there was a nationwide CCW. I can't believe people let city councils and county commissions usurp thier rights as much as they do!
I'm not a lawyer, gun dealer, cop, or any kind of expert, etc. only someone that did a little reading on the packing.org site to find out what the rules were before I want on a 2 week motorcycle ride this summer thourgh a lot of the western states (including Ca).
It is my understanding that this is federal law part of the US Code and it overides state and local laws provided you follow it as written. I believe the intent is to allow a person to transport their firearms through unfriendly country in route to friendly country.
If you do a search on packing.org for 926a you will find discussion on this and some disscusion on traveling via aircraft (stopover, etc. ) through unfriendly country. The one thing someone there recommended was carrying a copy of 926a with you. The theory being that local cops might not be familar with the US Code. I did read the NJ rules about transporting through the state and they read pretty much word for word from the US Code.
I suggest that people read up on the code and make their own decissions about it.
Hopefully there is an expert in this area on the formum that will chime in.
