Been playin' fiddle for a couple of years and about 20 years on the piano. Gonna pick up a mandolin as soon as I can mortgage the house...

777 - Know what you mean about the nails. I have the additional problem that my right index finger is deformed from getting it caught in a bike chain when I was about 8, so the nail grows a little hooked if I don't maintain the heck out of it. I keep tubes of superglue stashed around - it's a great way to save a nail tear if you catch it before it completely breaks off. I've rebuilt and filed some pretty pickable nails with superglue.



Buster Jones runs way longer nails than I do - I think he builds them up with nylon or something - I don't know.

I have read that there is a nail product that works great. OPI Nail Envy. Its not shinny, so it doesent look girly. I havent tried it though. My nails also hook down when they get to long.

I want to learn dobro and/or banjo, but either will have to be the good ole "buy the instrument, get the video and try to play" method. I have no idea how to read music.

I have no idea how to read music.

And neither do I. You can use the video and learn the instrument. I did. If I did it at 55 anyone can. Now you will have to REALLY want to. Just about drove the wife bananas. But she doesn't mind now.
