Best year and options for a conversion.

'94 Crew in Oregon

The allison has 5 clutches in it, and 3 planetary gearsets. A combination of 2 clutches produces a certain gear. The 3 planetary gearsets allow for more than 5 forward ranges and reverse. It actually allows 6 ranges and 2 reverses if I'm not mistaken. All model year '06 Allison's in GM vehicles will be 6 speeds.

We worked it out in my Allison warranty class, I think you can do a total of 7f/3r with the existing planetary sets. The planetary setup in these things is ingenious.

I've always wondered why Allison hasn't offered an over the counter bolt in replacement for the B47. They could easily do it and work out all the compatability issues and make a good option to the built DC trannies. They have the parts just put them together in a box and sell it.

Updated Pictures

Here's a couple of pictures of the 1000 series in the 1996. All I have left to do is a little wiring and put in the front d-shaft. It runs pretty well in limp home mode which is all you get whenever the TCM isn't wired. 3rd gear and reverse. I can definately tell that I need a tighter convertor.

Very good job.

I was comtemplating buying a wrecked Fed Ex truck and pulling the allison out of it.

I heard about the 6 forward gear over 2 years ago from my buddy that works and Smith Detroit Allison. Just he said that it was just programming. Maybe he was mistaken.

That gives me hope that it fits. I was planning on using a body lift to clear the bellhousing.

Please keep the info coming.

(I wonder if a 5" down pipe will fit  )

What are you going to do to upgrade the pressure. I have seen inside one before and the input shaft on the M1000 is bigger then the biggest NV5600 input shaft. Very impressive. The only thing that wasn't was the dinky little clutch packs. But I am sure that is just a mute point that can be addressed fairly easy.

Would one of you guys cover the costs and sources for the allison transmission options?

If I knew where to look, I'd keep my eyes open for a good deal with the intent on blowing my transmission in the future.

I just read an article in four wheeler tonight that said that no one has put the allison behind the cummins, and they want to know about someone who did. They might be interested in a write up from you.

Which four wheeler issue? page Number? Thanks. .

The 4" downpipe has plenty of room, you could probably squeeze a 5" in there. I don't think that the starter will heat soak. This is where the starter is on all cummins industrial apps.

No body lift is necessary to clear the bellhousing.

The clutch packs on the 1000 series are pretty good size. C3/C4/C5 are upwards of 10" in diameter.

the C1/C2 in the rotating clutches are smaller but they do OK except when you go over 700 lb/ft or so. But there are fixes. I talked to Stefan @ DTT about a built trans for this truck so that I can really go wild with it.

Stay tuned.

Which four wheeler issue? page Number? Thanks. .

I dont know if this was in FOUR WHEELER, but it IS in 4Wheel & Off Road, June '05, pg 95. David Kennedy is the tech editor who wrote the article titled "Extreme Diesels". His email is david. kennedy@primedia.com. I am sure he would like the work you have shown us here. BTW- very nice job on the install. :D

Did you go with the SAE bellhousing for any particular reason? I was kind of expecting a GM bellhousing when I opened the thread. I'm not real familiar with the 1000/2000/2400 trannys but I know that there are a multitude of shift programs for the larger versions. I used to work on fleet maintenance and we had 50 B400Rs and we went through several renditions on our trannys and they were pretty much all the same. Something as simple as a product upgrade on clutch material could require a program change.

We bought our coaches with 4 speeds when we still had a 55 mph speed limit, and the engines would reach max rpm @ 55 mph. The state bumped

up the speed limit to 65 mph so we went into the ECU and enabled 5th gear then we had to limit road speed through program change.

Nice looking job on the conversion, did you do any before testing so that you can do an after comparo.
