Donaldson Muffler

Just got back from having Fred Swanson install another 4 inch muffler on my 04. We tried a Walker 36 inch (21471) but it was just a bit louder than I wanted under a hard pull so Fred put in a 51 inch Donaldson ( M090544). That made things nice and quiet. Almost as quiet as stock but with a better tone. If you need any work done in the Phoenix area give Fred a call. He was more than willing to take the time to make me happy.

I have the Mick Donaldson 4" exhaust on my '04 as well. I like it too, it's quiet and sounds close to stock, but still has a nice deep tone to it when you get on it .

Does the Donaldson flow much better than the stock muffler? Also, what is the ballpark figure for the muffler and installation?

The muffler was $75 at a local ford truck dealer. You would have to check on a local install price. It is not a direct replacement for the stock offset muffler.

I was told that the stock muffler flows about 300 cfm.

The Donaldson that I have flows 2500 cfm.

SFR1047, The 21471 was too much for me, also. I was tired of changing mufflers to get a good sound so I packed the outer shells of the 21471 with steelwool and it sounds great. Did you notice any better spoolup or power? A friend was just here with his 03 HO 6sp and he hates the power compared to his turned-up 95. I thought about calling Fred to see what he did to his 03 but my friend won't spend any $$$ on his, anyway. I think he's happier *****in' about it! Craig

Schomer & JRG, Running empty I don`t feel any difference. I only had the 21471 on for a couple of days. The Walker flows more I am sure but how much flow is enough for a stock truck. It would be nice to hear the shorter Donaldson (M085171). It is louder than mine but also flows 50% more. I wish I new how much louder.

JRG-- What Donaldson muffler are you using ?

I looked at the Donaldson link above - they have a series of offset in/out mufflers - several that are 3. 5 in and 4 out! Specifically M090680 and M090520 - one is 36 1/4 long the other is 32 1/4 long.



Has anyone tried either of these for fit? I've never heard anything bad about these mufflers

offset in-out generally tells me that it's a tripple pass muffler... IE, considerably more restrictive than a straight-through muffler.

I went with Donaldson because these mufflers are designed for over-the-road trucks, thus they should flow plenty for our little 5. 9. Also highly available, resonable price, and durable.
