Are you saying you have changed the oil filter thru the fender on a 13 or newer 3500 Cummins truck without removing anything from the top?

It would be helpful if you filled in your profile.

According to his past posts....he has a 2015 3500 SRW. As of August 16, he said he only had 2000 miles on it......so I'm sure he's not changed it yet. He'll be in for a little disappointment with ye olde Saran Wrap..... :-laf

HAAAAA! Saran Wrap was a clue that did not add up!

Still would like to know how he did it!

I just changed mine through the fender about 4hrs ago. 1st service on this truck. Front diff1/2 qt low, trans 3/4 qt low, transfer case 2/3 qt low. I'm not too impressed.

No need to remove anything guys why do you think cutout is there on inner fender.and yes I did it last night no problem.little tight for sure but anyone with any common sense and mechanical ability won't have a issue.do you actually think it isn't done this way at the dealer or lube joints?

I too, changed mine through the Fender. I followed somebodies advice for slipping a ziplock baggy over it first.....'cept I did it when the oil and filter were still quite warm and the bag didn't hold up....made a mess. Now I know better (let it cool first).

I have done the fender and through the top on my 13. The fender was a very tight squeeze and I made a little mess that way even with my zip lock bag. I find it easier and cleaner to do it from the top. Now as to my original question I had when I saw this post why did the OP change his oil with only 2900 miles on a 15. They come factory filled with synthetic and rated for 15k miles between changes. Why I just don't get it, but I have never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Easy peezy boys ,start draining oil, wait half hour for hot oil to siphon back out of filter.jaw type filter wrench drop filter straight down .cover top of filter with Saran Wrap wrap filter with Saran turn 90 degrees pull out of opening .i sure wouldn't want the kid at the local lube shop pulling air intake off my truck.pretty obvious to a dumb machinist that the plastic window on inner fender is put there for a filter change

Does your look as confined as mine does in the pic?

What wrench did you use to remove and tighten the filter?

Mine is exactly like yours...but not as clean. I also used a typical oil filter strap wrench as mentioned above.

All you need to do is pull the filter down a bit, then rotate the bottom toward you...IIRC.

Be sure to use the freezer rated zip locks and you shouldn't have this problem.

I changed it early to get rid of any manufacturing debris and initial wear metals. I will change when the computer tells me to the next time around. Most likely it will be close to 15K. I will have the oil analyzed by Blackstone at that time.

Now with a few trips towing and about 6K on the clock I will be changing out the rear diff fluid to AMZ/OIL 75/110 Severe gear.

I don't like oil all over so I will stick to the method I described at the beginning of this thread. It really does not take much time.

OK, I can verify that the oil filter gorilla was still on the job in Dec 2014 when our truck was built. At ten weeks and 4025 miles on a truck that is really a year old along with the oil, I decided to change it today. We will be leaving after Christmas and will be gone until late spring, so I will not have to worry about a oil change while on the road.

I decide to not remove the steel tube and used water pump pliers to remove the spring clamp and lower hose from the bottom end of the steel tube. Next time I will most likely install a screw clamp in its place.

I put in Delo 15w40 LE oil and a fleetguard filter.

These booze bottles screw right into the valve cover. It took me about an hour start to finish included the logging and resetting the oil life indicator, which gave me a bit of a problem at first, until I studied the second screen, and moved it off the cancel screen to clear.

I always changed my 2001.5 from the top and this was not that much harder. Liked the Geno's HD replacement plug I had on the old truck. May get an EZ-Change plug for next time. Does the hose come included or do you have to buy both items separately?

Oh yeah, the fold up extra RV step with not skid worked well to be able to reach things. Mine is similar to this one with a different leg setup.

Did you put the full 12Qts in? If so check your oil if it has been sitting for several hours. Are you about an 1/8" or so over full?

Removal of the steel tube is really easy and the pipe comes off in one pc. But hey everyone needs to be different. :roll eyes:
