There is a simple way for the manufacture of the diesel Pick-up trucks to cut down on their customers "modifying" the trucks and tick people off when the void warranties ... offer a factory 600 hp. 2000 lb/ft. pickup truck with 10" C-channel frames and axles and trannys to handle the power ... SIMPLE!!

Even that wouldn't stop some of us from wanting more. I've got the TST and I'm already pondering adding an EZ, new fuel pump, modded cp3, clutch, bigger turbo and the lot... It's hard to imagine ever having "enough" power...

When I first got my Edge EZ I mounted it on top of the fuse box. The first time I took it in for service--leaking injector lines, I took it and the velcro off. After reading on here and realizing myself that was not quite honest, I decided not to do that again. Now the TST sits proudly on top of the fuse box with the EZ tucked in front of the battery in the battery box. :-laf If It needs to go back in for service, they will stay where they are. Just the risk we take want our 7+K truck to run like a viper!

One thing for sure you know what can happen. If you have a engine problem that when things happen. At our local Ford garage they enjoy taking your warranty. Don't care they are lousing a customer? :-laf I don't understand them.

This isn't anything new.

When I joined TDR in 99, it was the same story.

Even Jeep pulled a warranty cause there was mud on the firewall of a guys Jeep. "Trail Ready", just don't get it dirty.

And it kills me , cause they are earning record profits on Jeeps, trucks and SUVs (well until now with the huge increases in fuel costs, but back then they were)

When the truck was two years old, a went in for warranty with a bad LP, I spent hours arguing with them that the LP was bad. The 5 star dealer wasn't educated on the problem and the right way to test for a bad LP (they didn't even know what a VP44 was and I was talking to their diesel tech). Finally after a few hours, and a road test with the fp gauge attached, and the tech seeing a big 0 for fp, they called Cummins on the hotline and got educated.

I could over hear the tech talking to the service manager and say with an amazed and shocked voice that "he was right and he's also right that the VP44 could be bad, but Cummins said if there were no lean codes, it's probably ok". . and after the service manager and tech walked out to look at my truck, and continued talking. I couldn't hear the rest of their conversation, but when the service manager came back in, he told the service writer to make a note in the computer that my antifreeze color wasnt correct and had been changed. (I had flushed the engine and changed over to Cummins Feetguard premix).

So I guess they went over my engine compartment looking for a box of something, but could only come up with the color of my antifreeze.

Yet another example of how unscrupulous and somtimes clueless the dealer can be.

I was amazed when both my cousin and uncle, both of whom run the service department at a large DC dealership, hadn't heard of the "53 Block" issue. They kept telling me, "No, your truck is a 5. 9, not a 5. 3!" I tried in vain to explain the 53 block, yet they hadn't heard of it... . even after years of working on these trucks.

No doubt, the dealer knows and sees more things that we do but all too often they are a little ignorant of the information their customers come armed with before we even showing... all due to the internet.

As was already mentioned, there is no doubt it very much depends on the dealer. My experience is mainly from Jeeps, and I've seen/heard of dealers that deny coverage for Jeeps that have signs of off-roading or modifications. Yet other dealers are cool with it. I've been lucky enough to find a local Jeep dealer that is off-road and modification friendly. Maybe I'll learn more about the Dodge dealers in the same way.

I've only heard of one warranty being completely "pulled" and that is a Jeep that was wrecked, put back together, and wheeled hard.

In general, they can only deny coverage if the modification relates to the failure. For example, they can't deny a claim on a suspension part if the engine has been modified. However, unfortunately here we are all talking about the engine and the most expensive warranty part!

Oh geezz. . good one !

For me it was the TDR forum that gave me all the education and kept me well armed to deal with the dealer.

Sorry to say I didn't have a FP gauge installed. Did so right after having the warranty replacement done. I was running a nice 15psi and 11psi WOT. Then it went down to a steady 11psi for most all driving. Just yesterday I saw signs of the LP not being happy, saw 6pst and back up to 8-9, then back to 11 as it warmed up. Guess I better buy one and keep it in the truck. Off to the 2nd gen section to post a Q of what LP to buy from where.

What about non-electrical mods? Should I swap the AFE back to the stock air box before I go in for oil changes?

Thanks... ... . Steve

Your AFE will be fine... unless you end up with some kind of damage to a turbo that could be attributed to excess particulates in the air (just as an example). My dealer actually sells AFE and K&N filters (for the gassers).

Depends on the dealer.

If they get a bug up their butt, you'll find out and will be without.

Mine noted my color change of my antifreeze after the LP issue/argument that I owned them on, after first trying to reason with them on and had then finally had to refuse to leave till they called Cummins and changed it under warranty. Everything I said was backed up by Cummins.

So if I got a cracked #53 block, you know I'd be heading for court.

But with a month left on my 7year warranty. . I'll be left holding the #53.

I forget what the AFE is comprised of.

If it's an oil'ed element, the filter counts on the oil to trap the finer particles.

When the oil drys out, then what?

Some fuzzy info from 7 years of reading... ...

I've read in some older postings that the oil'ed type filters were recommended for oil burners for a few reasons.

Also I think I read somewhere that part of the emissions systems is the air cleaner and it's assembly. If that's true, it's another issue with the dealer yanking a warranty.

I have no power bombs on my truck, so haven't looked in to changing the filter. I have no EGT issues and even with a real dirty filter, I haven't pulled down on the minder.

The dealers are selling them for the gassers, but not the oil burners... uhhm, wonder why?

Your gamble.

Very dealer dependant.

Tommy Gun Key Cycles

I know the third generation smarty is not out yet but does anyone know if the smarty also zero's out the key cycles????

So, you take your truck in for a reflash TSB. It clears the key cycles. Your suspected for MODS. so warrenty gets cancelled

I think a warranty should be listed as an option.

not really cause it is recorded and when the tech reports the findings, STAR see the reflash and disregards...

This is a very inforative thread. It would make a good sticky... .....

This thread makes me glad I don't have the BOMB bug :D

Comming from a trucking background though I would like a set of guages, but I know that is also a red flag for denying warranty. (Must have taken his mods off before he brought it in cause he has guages!!!)

I would also like to pull the muffler off but leave the kitty and the resonator.

Hmmmmm, I feel a little sniffle comming on, BOMB BUG :--)

It's not just HP mods. I was at the dealer today. They are finally getting ready to install my new injector pump. He told me that they had a truck in two days ago with 9K on the odometer. The clamp on the rubber compression seal on the stearing linkage had come off and the guy had replaced it with a hose clamp. Probably a temporary fix. The mechanic told me the guy was charged $79 for a new clamp and installation. I went off like a cannon. I told him that I would have done the same until I could get it to a shop.

He told me that my pump leak could be repaired by removing the torx screws and putting sealant on them. I told him no way. Next time I have to have any warranty work done, I don't want to explain why those screws were removed and sealant put on. Plus, Bosch won't allow dealer mechanics to touch the pump. The pump has to eventually go back to Bosch. Put me a new pump on and let me go. Since it was not the dealer I bought from, I'm sure they inspected everything looking for a mod to deny the warranty. Twernt none. The pump should arrive by next Wednesday.

The more I read on this warranty stuff, the more I wish (like others have saide) that we could get the warranty as an option. Maybe a 6 month warranty just to make sure the truck isn't a lemon. After that, Bombs Away :D

Tomeygun

Do boxes like the Quad tow and Edge EZ leave a telltale trail in the computer?
