I need to know the measement from the back of the aluminium mount to the clutch fork front face.

I need to know if the slave cylinder is mounted on the front face of the aluminium mount.

I've installed a new SBC Con O pressure plate, disc, and new flywheel all from SBC. With the same clutch fork as before, my clutch pedal does not go to the floor before it stops, and the clutch does not disengage. I think the slave cylinder is fine and is bottoming out. If I put a washer between the clutch fork and the slave, then the pedal will go to the floor and the clutch will disengage.

I would like these measurements to compare with what I've got. I understand all will be a little different, but I need a ball park. I've talked with Peter, and he says of the hundreds of those clutches installed, he's never heard of this problem. He suggested I make the washer/spacer somewhat permanent and as the clutch wears, I can pull it out.

Thanks guys.

Michael

I can tell you that the slave cylinder mounts on the front (toward the radiator) of the slave mount.

Cant help ya on the measurement; I'm not even sure what you are asking about. My 1990 has a homemade fix, and my 92 is at the shop getting a second opinion on a strange noise. Plus it is a balmy 20deg right now- dont want to overheat myself this time of year.;)

Daniel

I figured that my slave was in the right place. I didn't remember molesting that area yet.

I want the measurement from the back of the aluminium mount that holds the slave, to the front face of the fork. Basically from the flat piece where the slave mounts to the flat on the fork.

Michael

See Michael, this is why many of us have numerous 1st gen trucks sitting around so when we do things like this, we got something to go look at to get it back to right:-laf... !! You're just gonna have to buy another truck to get this right:-laf!

I can't afford any of the unmolested trucks that come up for sale. Everybody wants to pay too much for even a junker.

Michael

If you hadn't molested your truck you wouldn't have this problem, pervert! :D

Sorry, that didn't help any did it? ;)

Ahh, Pete, what a time we are going to have at SOP#4... ..... I was pretty confident that I hadn't molested the slave cylinder yet. I remember way back in '96 I thought I had clutch troubles and put a new slave cylinder on it, and was sure I put it back together the way its supposed to be, but alass old age must be setting in, 'cause I couldn't remember for sure... ... :(

Now go out and measure your truck, unless you have one of those wussy trucks with only 2 pedals on the floor and shifter on the column. :-laf

Michael

Ya know, I'd really like to help you out! Oo. I have 3 pedals, but mostly use 2. The big problem is I'm parked in a snowbank about 3 feet deep. (after this weekend. ) And it's about 6* here now, so you see where I am? Yup, in the house, warm, on the 'puter! :-laf

Now Pete, its a grand total of 10* right now, I just got done haying the neighbors cows, with an open station 4010, and pulling net wrap off of snowy, frozen, bales. That was after we fed the calves feed, and the horse, two goats and watered them. My 4 year old daughter was following me around the whole time and refused to wear her mittens!! And you can't even go out and measure your truck? The humanity..... :-laf

That's ok, if I could I'd stay were its warm too. ;)

Michael

Michael:

On my setup with the NV4500 it measures roughly 2" & the slave is mounted on the front of the bellhousing/adapter which is 7/8" thick. We don't have as much snow as NY & it warmed up to 5 degrees today... yes I did wear a coat to lay in the snow and get the measurement for you. :D

Just for you!

Buddy! I went out and slid under the truck, it is a beautiful, sunny, 25*! The slave is mounted to the front, and it's 2. 25" from the rear side of the aluminum mount to the fork, at the tip.

Hope this helps ya! :D

Hmmm, I finally pulled up the roots in the floor of the garage and drove my truck. Alls good except the clutch does not fully disengage. I'll have to measure again, but I think my lever was only 2" from the aluminium mount. With the cylinder in the fork, the pedal will not hit the floor, the cylinder bottoms first. I added approximatly 3/4" between the fork and cylinder to get the pedal to hit the floor, and I can get it into gear and it will set still, but shifting is bad. I'm going to figure out more spacing to get the clutch to more fully disengage. One thought is to move the cylinder to the back of the aluminium mount for more stroke. Thanks guys.

Michael.

Michael, the coldest I've ever been in my life was feeding cows in December in south GA. That was in the late '50s before anyone had ever heard of a cab on a tractor. Never got that cold in Mass. or Germany. The Ford diesels would start instantly in winter (22:1) compression. The Deeres (16:1) weren't much interested when it got below 40 degrees. I've got a Case 580C hoe now that won't fire below 40 degrees either. But I no longer care because when it's below 40 I have no interest in running it anyway. The C or D model was the last one before Case dropped their engines and started using the B3. 9.

Yep, when it gets cold I don't want to go out either, but the neighbors cows need to eat, and the boss thinks I need to go out and earn some revenue, so out I go. Maybe sometime when I talk about way back in the beginning of the millineium I did chores with a 40 year old tractor in the dead of winter, just for a friend ;) Sitting beside my new fangled nuclear heater in my house.

Michael

Pete, do you think you can convince your lovely wife to push the clutch pedal to the floor, and then would you measure the deminsions again?

My measurement was almost the same as yours and a little less. With a small spacer between the rod and fork I could drive the truck but the clutch was not disengaging, making poor shifts, and hard gear engagment. What I ended up doing is pulling the rod out of the cylinder and making a new one from a 440 push rod. I made it long as possible but not too long to bottom out the cylinder in the other direction. Now I get total clutch disengagment, and nicer shifts. Occasionally its hard to go into gear, but I think that has to do with the brand new, sharp syncros I just installed. It still blows my mind that I'm the only one with a SBC that has had this problem. It sure engages smoothly!

Michael

I hasve noticed- with no rhyme or reason- that the pushrods for the slave cylinder are different lengths for different trucks. why is that?

Ah the fifties, I remember them well. We did have some real cold back then.

KOG Where are you now?

Michael, I agree, that was a good commercial.

Micheal, you didn't talk to my wife at SOP did you? I told her you were in desperate need of this measurement, she said "tough shirt!" I then whined, wheedled, cajoled, threatened, (she threatened me),until she gave in. She says you owe her a cookie, a BIG cookie! Not to be confused with a big filter! :-laf

The measurement is... ... ... . 3. 25, pushed to the floor! I hope this helps, as I got abused for it! :-{} :-laf :-laf
