Mopar Diesel

Poor rice lovers gettin' takin' advantage of...

My buddy has an early Powerstroke, it may even be a year or two before the powerstroke I forgot to ask, but anyway here's the problem... . it starts good when it's cold but is hard to start when it's warm. Anybody ever dealt with this?

How warm is the engine when he tries to start it?

Sometimes, even if it seems warm, they won't start without the glow plugs cycling once. Don't know why, they just do. My 6. 9L and both of my uncles 7. 3L N/A in his '91 and '92 (40k(?) on reman from Dealers Diesel) do it. Sometimes even if the water temp. is on the bottom edge of the Normal range.

He has replaced the glow plugs and relay. It starts fine when it is completely cold, but after it has been running, warmed up then shut off, it spuuters around and doesn't want to start back up.

Has/Have he/you checked the small fuel return lines that run in between the fuel injection nozzles, plus the return line that runs between the heads? How 'bout the o-rings under the plastic T fittings that the small return lines are attached to? They get dried out and crack like the rubber fuel lines on the Dodge trucks. Had to replace mine when I did the head gaskets.

How old is the fuel supply pump? Had to replace it also. Had very little resistance on the pumping lever after I removed it.

Any leaks on the fuel inj. pump? How old is the pump, or how many miles on it?

Sounds like air in the fuel system to me... check the injector cap o-rings... change the fuel filter and check the fuel return line.

I had the same problem with an idi Ford I have and these fixes solved the problem.

Thanks guys, at least I can check some things on there for him. I'm not too keen under the hood of those things. They dont leave enough space in there to be rootin around.
