No argument there, but I have an 1 1/8 12 point, which I won't use on that filter housing, and I needed a 6 point, then why not 28mm . We are talking eight bucks here

Here is why.

"Agreed, but I would still buy the 1 1/8" because there is more of a chance to use it on other things."

Thats an opinion, once that universal , and socket is on that nut it makes NO difference IMO whether that is a shallow or conventional socket. There is plenty of room for that universal to flex to allow that socket to be straight up, and down to remove. Yes I use a 1/2 drive ratchet with steady pressure until it starts moving. Leverage is nice if you know how to use it.

It does make a difference whether it's a shallow or deep. The shallow is shorter overall and necked down at the ratchet end which allows easier access for the universal or wobble extension. Of coarse never having used the Lisle socket you wouldn't know which is why your opinion has limited value.

" which is why your opinion has limited value." OUCH

I use a 1 1/8" impact 6 point the short one, that seems to allow the wobbly and 1/2" extension good alignment and keep everything as straight as possible.

This thread is ALMOST taking a turn as to the debate of oil filter removal through the fenderwell (with or without Saran Wrap; with or without Oil Filter Cap Off Tool) VS. removing the intake ductwork..... :-laf :D

28mm shallow socket or deep socket.....3/8" or 1/2" drive....with or without universal joints or wobble....length & number of extensions.... :-laf

29mm shallow socket or deep socket.....3/8" or 1/2" drive....with or without universal joints or wobble....length & number of extensions.... :-laf

1 1/8" shallow socket or deep socket.....3/8" or 1/2" drive....with or without universal joints or wobble....length & number of extensions.... :-laf

I will throw in my 0.02. I use a 1/2" drive 1 1/8" 12 point on my '05 because it is what I have. Works great. The dealer changed the original and then retorqued it just like the factory. I was afraid I was going to break the plastic cap on the second change, but I did get it off without issue using a cheater bar and I do not torque it near that tight myself.
This cap appears to be like spin-on oil filters. You put it on knowing it will be harder to take off next time.

You are correct for this application,I don't have a vast knowledge of removing a filter cap. It was a no-brainer as far as I was concerned, but heck what do I know. I know just enough with the tools I used that it was pretty simple and straightforward . So if this Lisle socket you are pushing works , great . I didn't see an issue . So my way has no value, because I haven't used a Lisle socket, please you can do better then that.

Heres the deal, all you still have is an opinion. If for one second I thought what I did was difficult or awkward , I would be listening .

I used the same socket the first time, but started hearing the horror stories about the 12 point, so I went to a standard sized 6 point 28mm. IMO its just depends on who has the tool in their hands. Some seem to need an Lisle socket

Everyone has has an opinion. Criticizing others without having used the tools in question is what reduces an opinions value. Isn't it time to service your transmission?

"Isn't it time to service your transmission?" I do a complete fluid exchange. I use a 1 1/8" 6 point socket. I change my oil filter from the top. I use AMZ/OIL products.

Speaking of changing oil, I did my second change this week. The pan on the 2015 is lower to the ground than my 2001.5 was. Even with my shorter Costco laundry detergent bucket it was tight working with plug.

Fuel filters pretty soon as I am sneeking up on 15k. I ordered a 28mm 6 point 1/2 drive socket. Geno's Garage will soon have a similar one available.

Snoking

Agreed. That is why the dealer did the first one. All I had available was a 12 point 1 1/8". It works fine if it is not over torqued putting it back on. You are right, to take it off the first time with the 12 point would probably have rounded off the cover. For what it is worth, I have a 1 1/16" 6 point.

All of this has made my head hurt. Pretty sure it is this as I do my oil filters from the bottom. :-laf

And you never know when to let it go. You know more than anybody, even the Trans Engineer. You argue for arguments sake. Time for the ignore button.

As the starter of this thread, I'm sure everyone will be happy to know I did get the cover off. My thoughts on the great socket debate is the 29mm and the 1 1/8 fit a bit loose but should work fine if the cover is not stuck. I do think a 28mm or 1 1/16 might be the perfect fit. In any case what really did the trick and surprisingly did not damage the cap was a chain vise grip. I cinched it around near the top and pulled. With no slippage, it loosened enough to where my 29mm took it right off. Thanks again for all the replies. It is amazing the amount of useful and entertaining information posted on this forum! :-laf

Service the transmission, I do know one thing , before I buy a tool for it, I will surely consult with you. Heaven forbid I buy another tool that works perfectly without checking in first.
