I've been pouring through the service records of the 98 12V I picked up. In Decemebr the previous owner had a bunch of work done and a comment on the reciept was "also found fuel injector pump too much fuel coming out of exhaust system" "may need injector pump replaced" It was not replaced though. It does seem to take about 3 seconds to start, and I ordered an overflow valve to see if that will address it, but can anyone comment on exactly what that the possibility is, or maybe something else to look into? Mileage seems poor and the slow starting along with that comment have me concerned.

P. S. The bill from that dealer visit was $2405. 94 :--) They did PS pump & lines, oil change, throttle linkage, brakes, and valve cover gasket... talk about NUTS!!

No they didnt, and I doubt they checked. It was a local dealer that sees far more minivans than cummins... Would slipped timing cause those symptoms? I need to take the truck upto Scott at MassDiesel and get a good look over, Id like to tackle as much as I can though to make it easier. I am sure regardless the truck could benefit by bumped timing to 15. 5*, as far as these trucks slipping timing how low have some gone and what were the symptoms?

I would look at the injectors 1st , they could let excess fuel by , and would be cheaper .
The dealer would not change the timing even if you asked.
Get one of the inferred temp. guns , and check temp of each exhaust port [ starting from cold eng. & then have some one hold throdle at 1,200 RPM & watch as it warms up ] , what I'm sugesting is to look that all cyclinders are firing & fuel is not washing out the exhaust .

Try this for the hard starting. Turn the key to the on postion-depress the trottle just a little bit and hold-now hit the starter. As for to much fuel, can you see it coming out the exhaust or just smell it? On the 215hp motors (that I've been around) the exhaust always swells like raw fuel coming out at idle. The timming is 13. 5 degrees on the 215's which does not help either of these things.

To be honest I havent noticed anything other than the starting issue and poor mileage. I brought all the receipts from the original owner to work and have been reading through them. . some serious $$$ on a lot of silly things... Thank god I'm a DIY guy! It just sounded odd about the IP though with their reliablilty and host of other things, that I would think could yield the same symptoms...

have you checked your oil for diesel contamination? Might be a broken injector thats causing the raw fuel to enter the exhaust.

Valve adjustment could do this also.

Valves were done not too long ago, I have a long weekend coming up and will get the overflow valve and will see what that does. Id like to find someone local with the timing tools that I could borrow in return for some beer :) The truck definitly has some "issues" but its soooo damn cool looking! New bilsteins are going in this week too, along with a full detail, and my WVO conversion I put together...

I posted a reply but I guess I forgot to hit the submit button or something. .

Id check your oil for diesel contamination and bad injectors. Also Id check the valve clearance since that could also allow raw fuel into the exhaust.

crud under a valve could also allow it to hang open. Maybe a compression check?

Heh I still want to check this truck out this weekend but I dont personally own a timing kit or even the barring tool =(

It looks like it may rain on saturday. I get my truck back from Mass Diesel on friday unless they find something unexpected that needs fixing.

Sorry about the double reply looks like my browser just didnt refresh properly
