Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Advice on Bombs

I have a situation here that is against the book. The Dodge manual states that my 2002 Ram stock lift pump, at start-up, is suppose to put out 7 psi. Which, understandably is to allow the engine to start easier. After the engine is started, the pressure is to be no less than 10 psi at idle.

Welllllll, the fuel pressure in the start-up mode is 10 psi, not 7. After starting the engine I get a maximum of 8. 5 to 9 psi at idle. Driving speeds (no load)vary on the average between 6 & 7 psi. WOT is 3-4 psi.

I changed my fuel filter when I bought the truck at 42K and now have 49K. My manual pressure gauge is connected to the fuel system with a 1/4 "ID fuel line. This connection is at the Schrader valve of the VP44. The previous owner in Canada put on 42K miles, of which 98% were highway towing miles of an unknown weight trailer. Unknown if this is the original LP. If looks could tell, it probably is.

I haven't noticed any loss in power since I've owned the truck. Soooooo, with the information that I stated, can anyone tell me: (1). Why the reversal in pressure readings for idle and start-up and (2) even though these reading have been consistant for the last 6+K miles with some towing of a light trailer and a couple 500 mile 12K pound tows, am I in danger of harming my IP even though I have no indication of harm so far? And lastly, could this be a sign that a new or better pump is way overdue or should I try a different gauge or do both?

If you are using a mechanical guage then I would say you LP is shot. With a good LP you should be running around 12psi on the freeway. On my truck when I turn on the key I get 15 psi and 13 at idle. But my truck hasn't had the re-flash that causes the LP to drop down when starting. From your numbers I would have to wonder if your truck is dropping the voltage too. But first things first, get a new LP before you lose a VP. :)

My 01 has the re-flash and when you turn the key on the pressure will hit 15psi then goes to around 5psi, after start-up i get 14psi, 12 at cruz and 6-7 at WOT with the box on 5x5, box off i get 10 -12 at wot

it sounds to me you need a L/P
