I hope it does not go this far but seems I read the ECM can cause this also. I remember you did have a hiccup with the lift pump not shutting off once. This is getting expensive.

Dave, yes getting $. I don't recall having issue with pusher pump? Maybe just my clouded memory? As for ECM, PCM & VP electronics these were bypassed and still stalled. I'd rather be putting the $ towards new home and my Duster, but need a truck to work on both, or at least tow Duster once it's done. Like I mentioned I'm keeping the truck "forever" so sooner or later either of the systems would fail. When original VP went there was no signs at all. On way to work and at 35 the truck just shut off, no lights on dash (like if you just turned key to on), no codes just stopped and wouldn't start. Fingers and toes crossed

So new VP installed no change. WTF!!!! Isn't there some device that can be plugged into the OBDII port on this old 99 that'll display"live data" to help determine what is causing the stall. Still gets me that all was well before install of injectors...

Only dies from Idle/Park to drive ?. My old neanderthal brain would be to check each wire to the VP in the diagrams and know what it does and how to check it. Maybe getting/losing a shutdown signal ?.

Doesn't matter if in P or N, if placed in R or D, it stalls most times.
Sometimes it "almost" stalls = idling in N or P place in D or R and idle drops immediately to around 500 and then immediately and abruptly returns to idle.
Most times it just stalls.

I've been trying to see if anyone can "for sure" tell me that there's a "Live Data" reader that'll show WTH is happening when it stalls.

Let us not forget that there are "NO CODES" thrown when the engine stalls...

My thoughts are if there's no codes then one of the bazillion sensors is bad causing stall and no code...

I'm (as is Tim) so at the end of tolerance and wits end.

Will be calling Tim this afternoon to discuss if he knows of something that'll display live data and help narrow down/pinpoint.

Here's something I totally forgot about and hope I remember to mention to Tim, not sure if this is normal or not, but ->
with engine idling the throttle lever in engine compartment sitting on the idle stop (not a stop that can adjust idle) it takes about 1/8 - 3/16ths" of movement before change in RPM.

This stall business seems like there's supposed to be a signal from somewhere to somewhere else that when at idle and placed into gear the idle should increase to compensate for slight engine load in order to maintain the idle speed (800+) and that isn't happening

David, as far as all the wires and connections and grounds I've gone over them (not just a cursory look either) and they're all solid, clean, tight and not corroded.

Thanks

Autoenginuity or Chryslers DRB-III.

Have you checked the crank pos sensor? If that signal gets lost it stalls from what I know, that's the one most important sensor on the engine.

And by no codes - you mean that you don't see them, that doesn't mean they are not existing. How are you checking codes?

- Will tell Tim to check. I know I replaced it some years ago as no start and CEL illuminated code reader reported it was bad.

- I mean no CEL displayed

Could you provide specifics on Autoenginuity device.

Thanks

I also read over there of changing the batteries and the rpm did not drop as much .
Here's the CPS thread, kind of makes sense if the ECM doesn't get the right signal it could turn off the VP and could also cause the surging. It could be just a low rpm glitch and be the cheapest part. There are quite a few threads on the Mopar1973man.com for surging/stalling.

Talked with Tim today. He has and used the Chrysler software. He's got a 99 ECM he's going to connect up and see if it makes any difference. Told him I'd like to wrap this up this week.

Thanks for replies.

I dunno with such a strange issue but I would be inclined to replace the CPS first. I know the starter has to come out. I have the now old OBD software where I can watch what's going on and I don't think it would tell me anything for sure as when the engine dies or surges things are going to go whacky anyway. I think the program was written by Alex Pepper and shows codes/clears, has gauges and data tables. Probably not around anymore but works on my truck and the Wife's Toyota.
