Don't know how many it will help or if it will help anyone. My father's 03 had an exhaust smell in the cab, especially when warming up in the morning, or sitting idle for a period of time. Dealership extended his vent tube and checked all the exhaust clamps but it didn't solve the problem. When he returned it to the dealer, they found a loose vaccuum hose. What hose, where, and all of that I don't know, but it may give you some where to start or hopefully STOP!!!:)

Vacuum hose? There shouldn't be any vacuum hoses on the 03 engine!

Again, not a mechanic, and just quoting what POP said. I didn't have any involvement in the problem except for listening to my dad gripe!

I think there are vacuum lines along the top of the firewall. At least on my 99 there are. The reason that I know is because my cruise control quit working and I discovered a vacuum line that runs from the firewall to the cruise unit was off. I must have knocked it off when I changed the fuel filter.

03 trucks don't have a vacuum pump (pre-03 trucks did have one). There are no vacuum accessories on the trucks. Unless the automatics have a vacuum pump, for some reason.

Pop's truck is an 03 SLT 4x2 3500 SRW 4dr short bed automatic and HE said the hose was somewhere near the firewall on driver's side. ALL I KNOW. He's in Florida now!!

Electric Vacuum Pump

Yes, there are vacuum lines to operate the HVAC system. There is an electric vacuum pump on the passenger side of the engine compartment to the rear of the battery. Raise the hood, have someone turn on the ignition switch after the truck has been setting and you will hear it running.

The same setup as a PSD!

I'm pretty sure the HVAC system in the '03 uses electric motors and not vacuum motors for the actuators. Says so in the service manual.

Diesel/Exhaust/Oil smell in cab

Alright this is getting old. The smell in the cab (mine only when parked and running) seems to be apparent with a bunch of us with the '04 trucks. What's the fix. The dealer claims no knowledge or complaints and of course wants the truck to check it out. Over my dead body will they be touching my truck without me at least completing due diligence and self educating on the problem.

If anybody has found a fix please post it. Has anybody trusted their dealer enough to let them fool with his/her truck and find the solution?

DC are you on top of this one? Let's see the TSB ASAP.

Unexplained noxious fumes in a cockpit are an immediate red X item and a TCTO is in order (ex USAF guys will understand this).

Let's get it fixed before someone passes out at the wheel and press on with the next challenge.

"Diesel/Exhaust/Oil smell in cab"

Hey guys... new to posting... been hanging around for a while... never posted anything.

I have an 04'. I have had the exhaust smell since I bought it. I am new to a diesel... . just thought it was NORMAL.

Guess not.....

The smell is normal. There is an older TSB for the 2nd gen trucks that explains it. This is an open breather, and any odor from the crankcase is going to be able to be sucked into the HVAC system. Just as in my 03, the smell will go away in time, and return after every oil change. The harder you can run it, or the heavier load you pull will make it go away a little faster. EVERY truck will do it, but some guys just may not see the right conditions for it. The truck has to be stopped, and the wind has to be blowing the right way. If it annoys you, just press the max button like my wife does.

My theory is that with the electric fan, there is not enough air moving in the engine compartment to blow the odor back and under the truck. And just like last winter when I picked up the 03, the fan hardly ever locks up as much as it does when the weather gets warmer.

Nothing "normal" about having exhaust in the cab... ... except maybe in the city behind a metro bus, and yea I get it sometimes also along with oil smells after an oil change strong enough to make my eyes sting. Not something I want to get used to, and yes, I will find its source and choke it off if I ever get the time off and motivation on the same day. If anyone has a sure solution it would be helpfull.

What does it smell like? Blowby (from the breather) sure smells different than diesel smoke. Try to figure out what you're smelling. Then you'll have a better idea of what to fix.

As far as passing out, if it's diesel smoke, it should not cause anyone to pass out. Unlike gasoline engine fumes, diesels produce almost no carbon monoxide.

I get no smell in my cab, unless the wind blows just right and brings a little exhaust from the tailpipe in.

I'm thinking if the breather hose is routed closer to the air filter, then the fumes could be drawn in and burned. There shouldn't be any danger of a runaway, but that should be checked out first.

I will have to wait for warmer weather before I mess with that, but I have smelled the fresh Rotella a time or 2. :(
