I think the Cummins pays for itself faster than you estimate. Your cost estimate assumes that the Cummins has no resale value. I haven't checked used truck values, but I assume that the Cummins is worth more than the standard V8 or V10 when you sell it.

EXPAT: Excellent point!!!

to add to the above excellent points..... the Cummins will go X00,000 miles without an overhaul, whereby a gasser in a heavy-duty truck will likely need several in the same number of miles (especially in heavy towing use)

My old '96 Ram had a V8 with a 5spd and my diesels kick the snot out of it. I put on over 550 miles a week on my '00 4x4 Ram and I'm very happy that I only need to fill up once a week. Now if I still had the V8,I would have to fill up every other day with those miles. My wifes '95 2wd Ram will go about 700 miles before she fills up... about once every other week.

This makes me feel better now too. I have put on 31k since August, or about 3500 miles/month towing about 3-4k. I never really figured out the savings but now I know for sure! Besides I love it when people roll up there windows next to you at the stop light and give you a dirty look, I just laugh at them. #ad

Absoutely, there are other factors involved in payoff, But I wanted to show Direct Fuel Operating Costs only. I also made Assumptions about Diesel vs. Gas price differential staying the same, and also, standard estimated MPG, But anyway, It still shows the real cost effectiveness of owning a Diesel. I can now justify going for an EZ among other BOMB's. Hey Doug Hatfield. Remember when I first joined and said I would keep the Truck Stock. Guess it must have been something in the Water I drank. I have seen the light. HAHAHAHAHA Changed the Name Above. Doh! The Brain Don't work as good in the PM.

we got $15500 trade in for our 96 ctd [hated to see it go] and $11000 for our two v 10s at trade in. all three trucks turned around and were sold within a week. they all had about 150000 miles and paid 29500 for the gassers and 32500 for the diesel. all were fully equipped 5 speed 3500's. id say that the extra exspense of the diesel paid for itself not only during operating costs, but in the long run. btw, our 97 4 door 4 wheel drive chevy, fully loaded and with 115000 miles only brought 9800 at the auto auction in north carolina. this tells me something, even the pros that buy and sell trucks know a lightweight when they see it.

Although I agree with the comments here, and am thrilled with my truck and the fuel economy, a point to keep in mind in calculating the savings, is if you are like me, and have to finance the truck, you are also paying interest on the $5000 for the CTD, while the gas is paid for over the life of the vehice. If you are one of those who can pay cash for the truck, ... well, I'm envious.

klenger, that's a whole different subject because not everyone pays the same price for a truck. My '99 was 29,400 and my '00 was 30,300 for example. You also have rebates and farm member rebates which bring the price down even lower. Then you have all those guys that probably payed sticker. I've run across people that have bought a gasser truck for the same or more of the price I paid for a diesel truck.

Right now we're just looking at it from a 'drive and use' perspective.

Ranger Dick actually I think you mean Doug Hatfield as I used my brother computer at the time with his e-mail address. I was the same as you an thought I would leave it stock, but I just couldn't. You will love the EZ as it really woke up my sleeping giant.

I bought mine because of these things:

*) Heavy Duty Engine
*) Very good resale
*) Less than 30 days to sell in MI
*) Better MPG
*) Less costly fuel
*) Turbocharger/Fuel mods(BOMBing)
*) I always wanted one

What I did not expect is that at traffic lights people intentionally stay FAR away from a shaking/rattling/stinking truck...

Ever look at their face when you pull up next to a convertible and the exhaust pipe is near their door? I guess that is ONE time in which they wish they were in a regular vehicle. :)

Gotta love the sound of the Cummins.

I have the opportunity of driving a 2500 4x4 5. 9l Gasser Work truck along with my Cummins personal Vehicle. Here's what I've found for fuel comparison cost. In my cummins a typical tank full is 29. 4 gallons to go 520 miles. Fuel price is $1. 55/gal. This comes out to be $45. 57 or $. 0876 per mile. For the gasser, I usually fill at 260 Miles, take 25. 4 gallons and at $2. 09 per gallon, it takes $53. 08. Now to make things equal, for the gasser to go 520 miles, it would cost about $106. 16 or $60. 59 more for the same amount of miles or about $. 2042 per mile. Therefore, I'm seeing a savings of around $. 1166 per mile in the Diesel $. 2042-$. 0876. The Cost for the Cummins add on was $4781 so $4781/$. 1166 comes out to 41,003 miles to pay off. Now, if you multiply 200,000 miles times $. 1166 your cost savings comes to $23,320. 00. This makes me very happy I bought the Cummins. Or if you are HVAC, That's alot of money to spend on BOMBing. So, when the wife complains about spending$$ on the Cummins, point out you are really saving $$.

Right on!!!! I am NOT HAPPY that I have the v-10. At $1. 70/gal, and 8 mpg, my BOMBing is going slower than wanted. Each day I am closer to plunkin' down the cash for a new CTD.

Come on Jeff, slip on over towards the light. Things are good here. #ad

I did the same thing with my numbers it came out to about 51k to payoff. That includes a $5225 engine and cheaper gas. At 200K the gasser need a rebuild or replace the Cummins should go a bit longer!
