Fired up the truck yesterday morning (Up here in Detroit), put the fan on #4 with defroster on and my radio made the weirdest sound. I verified the radio was turned off. The sound was kind of static - squealing, maybe 3-4 seconds long. Then I realizer the fan would only run one speed (#1) in the first three speeds. High #4 works fine. Guess I need to pull the switch and clean / replace this switch. Any help is greatly appreciated. Any idea on the cost of a new switch.

I'd guess that it's not your switch, you might try looking at the resister under your dash. It is basically a voltage divider used to supply the heater fan with different voltages for the different speeds.

It's usually a simple plug in item, but I have seen them melted in.

good luck

I also would replace the resisitor. It is a five minute job. I have had the samething on mine and it was the resisitor.

If you look under the dash on the far right, you will see the housing for the blower fan. The resistor is right there with it. It has a couple bolts and a plugin. If your fan was making a little noise, you might take a little light oil (motor oil) and lubricate the bushings in the fan. I've had a couple of these resistors go out, and I think I need a new blower motor.

I just had to replace the resistor block on my mothers 2004 caravan. I was able to use a jumper wire to get the fan working while the dealer was ordering it.

I was looking up these resistor blocks on the web and I found literally hundreds of posts for minivans with failed resistor blocks. It wouldn't surprise me it was a similar design to what is used in out ctd's.

With a jumper wire and a test light you should be able to get your fan working and diagnose if it is in fact a failed resistor block.

It was -34 celsius here last week. Thats -29 fahrenheit.

No fun to have the blower motor go out on you!

Be aware that if your fan is about to go out, it will burn up a new resistor in a short time. So while you are under the dash... . might as well pull the fan motor also!

This is what happened to me. I changed the resistor, and the fan worked fine for about a month, when the resistor burned out again.

My fan started squealling, on and off, months ago, and the resistor network burned out so it only ran on high. I put a new resistor network in (a dealer part), and things worked great at all the speeds. It only lasted three days, and now the resistor network burned out again. I wish I had read this thread and replaced the fan motor at the same time.

If you have a u-pull-it yard near you check them out. All 2nd gen, 1500 to 3500s use the same fan and resistor so the are easy to find. I paid $5 for the combo here.

I had same problem, replaced the resistor on my 98, took about 10 min. Local Dodge dealership charged me $115 for a "heavy duty resistor". Probably made in China for a few bucks.
