Hello all!

I just acquired my truck this week, joined TDR and so far have found a lot of good useful info. Today I installed a pyro and boost guage. I am good with mechanics and have spent a LOT of time working on my own gasoline vehichles, but I have to admit that I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to working on diesels.

The previous owner had made some pretty scary tweaks to the fuel pump, uncluding putting the spring on the wrong side of the diaphram (I'm guessing to make it smoke as much as possible). I have adjusted the wheel under the top cover and the max power screw as to get it about where I think it should be, and the truck seems to be running good, but still smokes quite a bit. I am wondering what if any general guidelines I should follow for "tuning" the motor. It is stock as far as I can tell, with 111k on the odometer, except for the fact that it has dual 5" stacks connected to a 4" exhaust. The downpipe appears stock.

Thanks for the help, and so far I'm loving my truck (that I spent over four years looking for the right one).

WECOME TO THE RANCH

Glad to have another member in the congregation... . you'll find everyone willing to help were they can Loren.

What would help with your question is to tell us what your EGT's and boost numbers are like right now. That will give us an indication of how much the old girl is turned up.

Things like that are part of the basic info that gives all of us the direction to go when a question come/problem comes up.

How's your temps around town or, when you get on it hard ... . that sort of thing.

rWelcome New TDR Member and I know you will really enjoy your new toy. I spoke to a diehard Ford man yesterday I thought-But quess what -I saw him at a local DODGE DEALORSHIP about a week ago. He asked me how I liked my trucks-Thats right 2 of them. Iliked the first one so well-Ihad to have another. 1999 1 ton duelly-five std 3:54 rears two wheel drive-Bright Red. The other is a 1990 1 ton duelly with 160 hp-auto. -Both are completely stock. O-Well back to my yarn-this man bought the 1 ton duelly-diesel-2006 year I believe with a 6 speed stick. I saw him at the store yesterday and asked him how he liked his truck. He said that he loves his truck. He pointed to a 18 wheeler log truck sitting in the store yard and he told me that the truck had torn up out in the street with a big load of pine logs on it. He said that his truck pulled this 18 wheeler-trailor withaload of logs out of the street and into the store parking lot without any strain whatsoever-barely above idle. This maid a believer out of him. He has owned Ford's--Chevy's and finelly tried a Dodge . He said there was no comparision. |Dodge wins . I hope you like you truck as much as I like mine. If you have a problem-there's plenty of Fellow TDR Members who will be more than glad to help. Call on me anytime & if I can help -I will be glad to. BHerndon P. S. W|elcome to the world of DODGE AND CUMMINS AND ESPECIALLY TO THE TDR WORLD. IT'S IN A CLASS ALL OF ITS ON. Happy Motoring

Hey, thanks for the quick replies guys!

I just got the boost and pyro guages installed today, so I haven't had a whole lot of time to monitor things yet. But from what I saw here in Phoenix today (85 degrees today for what it's worth), I was getting about 300-400 degrees around town, about 550-600 degrees on the freeway at 60mph and flat on the floor pulling a slight hill unloaded the highest I was able to get it was about 825 degrees. I did install the pyro in the downpipe, immediately after the turbo. I know in the manifold is supposed to be better, and perhaps when I get braver I'll pull it and move it... but for now this works. The most boost that I've seen was about 20psi, and that was at the top end of 3rd gear. Other than that, the most it ever climbs to is about 15psi or so.

I hope this info helps. Thanks so much for the input!

For what it's worth, I also had a '97 CTD 1 ton dually, club cab, 5 speed that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to do much with before the end of its short life due to a lady in a Cadillac that didn't like to stop for stop signs. I always wanted a '93, and I should have just kept looking, I like the '93 "Stacks" as I've named it... WAY better than I ever liked the '97.

Thanks again!

Welcome aboard Loren. You find out a lot of good information on your 1st generation Dodge/Cummins 5 speed. You will also get a lot of bad and confessing information. You do know that the new kid on the block always has to bring the beer and pizza to the next local meeting and I can be there. Grizzly

Grizzly, I guess I'll have to accept those terms. Now, we just need someone else to join before the next meeting and I'll be home free! haha

Welcome

Welcome.

As a relative "New Guy" myself, I can tell you that all the guys here are great and the info is straightforward. There's pretty much anything and everything you've ever wanted to know about your Dodge and Cummins in here, all you have to do is ask and you shall receive.

Stay safe, John

Welcome aboard, I've been a member for a year and these guys never let you stay in the dark for very long. This has got to be the most dedicated website for helping others that exists. Drop me a line sometime I'm in phoenix also. Just purchased yesterday another truck. 93 1 Ton dually regular cab 5 speed. Oo.

Hey Jay, we'll have to get them to come to the east coast if they want good pizza right? ;) Anyway, welcome LDechaine, lots of good people here with lots of good advice. B

LD - welcome to the club! Good stuff and great people are just a few of the coments made about the TDR. Us 1st genners are a special breed - usually involving getting our hands really dirty... and the cars behind us ;)

Thanks for all of the "welcomes" guys. So far I'm really loving the truck, and all of the insight from the 1st Gen forum. I have some pretty good plans for the old beast in the near future. I'm working on getting down from five vehicles to a reasonable four (roommate also has four), and I've promised not to do anything major to the truck until then... but I think one is sold tomorrow, so the time is coming my Giant Friend (talking to Stacks, my truck). Did I mention I need a wee bit of help?)
