What are my options for high idle on a '96 12v? This is the first diesel pick up I've owned but had my own Peterbilt at one time and have driven class 8 trucks for nearly 30yrs. On the class 8 trucks, most can be idled up by turning on the cruise and hitting set on the cruise control....I know a throttle cable of some kind is an option. I'm wondering what others have done.

Cut a stick to fit between the pedal and the front of the seat. Adjust seat according to the rpm you want. Did it this way for years on my '97.

I was reading in the 24 valve forum that a high idle option can be put into the ECM or have it turned on at the dealer. Is that possible with the '96 12 valve?

No, the 12 valve engine is purely mechanical. Go to your local heavy truck parts shop and ask for a PTO cable. Install it on the drivers side of the transmission tunnel and connect it to the pump linkage. You'll need to source a barrel type attachment that allows normal throttle movement yet allows the PTO cable to pull the throttle linkage.

I've got to winterize a 12 valve and a couple new 2015's later this summer...........I'll try and post some pictures to tdr of the PTO cable setup I use.

On the older GM trucks with the 454, and some 350's had a solenoid that would hold open the throttle above idle while decelerating. They had an electric and also a vacuum type operation. I have both and installed the electric on mine and it is adjustable. Had to fab my bracket and installed a switch to activate when I want the hi-idle. A recycle yard might be a cheap way to go but it will take a lot of looking.
If you want to go the the vacuum type that I have your welcome to it just pay the postage. Let me know by PM.

If your desire is to warm the engine faster on a cold morning an exhaust brake is much more efficient.

PTO cable is under 100.00, easy to install and no need to change exhaust valve springs. And, when it's cold out, exhaust brakes still don't make heat without rpm.

I pointed it out because the OP could very well have an EB. It would be pretty silly to install one just to warm the engine when it is cold. Of course the engine has to have RPM, it won't warm up if it isn't started. Jacobs EBs only work at idle, I don't have experience with aftermarket.

I use a cheap squeeze clamp. Take off the end, and move it so it pushes instead of pulls, so it can be custom... It's a must have for the cold months.
