Not sure what you want?

I have fixed my KDP before it became a problem. I have a picture somewhere of a motor that came apart after the pin fell out and into the cam gears.

I found it. will try to post it here. If nothing else, this picture should give you enough impetus to go to the trouble to fix the pin before it falls out.

I apologize for the bad photo. My son, who is a diesel mechanic, took the photo with his cell phone. He was looking into why the motor "just stopped" with a bang as reported by the freight line truck driver.

He had to replace the whole engine assembly, they got a complete "new" rebuild from Cummins complete with accessories ready to run. Cost from Cummins was $9,000 at their shop rate.

I have seen several 98. 5 and 99's that had the old gear case. supposedly they revised the gear case sometime in 99. the dowel pin hole is stepped so the pin can't come out. I can post the years and the build dates on the ones I've seen if you want me to.

That would be great ! Thanks

Anything concrete that could be used to verify without pulling the front of the motor apart would be great. I've heard several different versions on the kdp. I need to put a new radiator in the 01 soon and would prefer to take care of it then if it needs doing. I keep hearing it may or may not have been fixed by 01:confused:. I know I'm going to check the 90 while I got it out for the swap.

I always wondered if I had to do it or not ,now that its done I dont have to worry about a $9000 failure. that is worth the effort IMO!!

I agree completely. That's why I'm planning ours soon. It would just be nice if somebody found a reliable way of knowing when the factory addressed the issue.

YES!, please, someone, post serial numbers for when Cummins fixed this issue. Appears to be just one more thing to fix? I too, was under the impression that this was a 12V only problem. Tell me it ain't so.

this is my 98. 5 24v "KDP".

you need to consider that this dowel pin is made of solid steel and can blow your timing gear case clean off !

you don't have to fix it. you just have to ask yourself one question...

" do you feel lucky, well do ya? ... . PUNK !!":-laf

one "KDP" repair kit = $50

two hours labor $ = a six pack

knowing that dang thing is dead! = $ ? PRICELESS!!!:-laf

I thought about it ,but the VP44 isn't cheap:eek: and apparently the intercooler doesn't come out without removing the front bumper and AC/trans coolers!#@$%!

when i pulled my 92 apart to do the pin it already had the stepped case and the pin was solid. it was wasnt a total waste though because every seal on the hunk of junk leaks like a sieve so at least i got one seal replaced
