Reese 15,000 5th wheel question

What size Solar Panel?

We just sold a man a 1995 King of the Road M37CL Max Triple Slide 5th wheel. This unit grosses out at 9, count it, 9 tons. Probably goes over 15,000# empty. He has a 2000/2500 Chevy with something called a 6000 gas engine and automatic trans. He came by yesterday to pick up the hitch he is going to install in his truck... ... ... ... I tried one more time to voice my concern about him not having enough truck... ... . He cut me off in mid sentence with "IT WILL PULL IT"!!... ... ... . I just shut up and walked off. When he hooks up to that trailer next week, I am going to be right behind him with my forklift, and if he so much as slows down going out my gate, I'm going to push him out into the street!! I have pulled this unit with my truck... ... it's a HOG! Oh well, I tried:eek:(

Hardhead

All you can do is try, after that the wrecker is $4. 00/mile with a $200. 00 min. and the new transmission is $7,000. 00 plus installation. If he didn't listen to start with won't know the difference!

Isn't it a wonder - how smart some of these people are??? Worries me to be on the road with them. Barry, you tried to tell him and I salute you smartly for that. You are the exception among dealers.

I just hope I don't run into him out on the interstate somewhere!

With my luck, I will be at the bottom of the hill he runs off of.

When we were shopping for our 5er I got tired of the salesmen asking what my tow vehicle is. They talked down to me like it was my first trailer. So . . . I started telling them in laid back voice and a straight face that it was a Toyota. When they started to challenge me I reinforced my stance . . It is a T100!! . . It will handle it just fine!

I loved the look on their faces.

It will pull it ?

I saw a guy pull a simi on TV , but never saw one that tried to stop one going down hill . The fun starts on the down side of the hill , he will have plenty of time to injoy the sights on the up hill . live and learn? hope so . Ron in Louisville . P. S get a disclamer from this fine fellow RV king of the road.

Barry, If you sold that rig to him, maybe you should have put your concern in writing and had him sign it. That way he couldn't come back and try to get ya. Don't want to get you worried or nothing, so lets hope he does OK with it and drives real slow. He probably will go slow after the first scare

Doc

As Is, Where Is, Like Is... . No warranty expressed or implied. He does not even have the overloads on his truck. When he leaves out, I will take a picture and post it. He probably will have to put rollers on his pick-up bumper. 'Betcha the hitch weight on this trailer is over 3,000#:p

where there is a will there's a way. I had a gentleman order a hitch for an old jeep cherokee. I asked him what he was towing and what size ball he needed. He told me he was towing a 60' sigle wide from Cetral Oregon to Here in Hood River. I begged him to reconsider and call an outfit that did this type of hauling, but he told me what he was doing and demanded the hitch. Wonder if he ever made it?

Barry,

Do RV dealers, new or used, have any liability regarding safe towing capacity? A 18k trailer behind a PU? I know a bunch of folks here do it & I've voiced my opinion on it - no need to go there.

If this idiot has a problem (as in accident) it will reflect on all of us who tow.

I heard recently that the MOT in Ontario is "cracking down" on rigs that exceed there GCWR. According to the source, when/if you get pulled over the MOT will check the GVWR of the trailer and the tow vehicle and if they exceed the GCWR you will get a $195 ticket (that's Canadian $$ eh). Apparently this measure is nail those pull with a 1/2ton.

I took a look at the sticker on the door that gives weights, tire info etc and nowhere did I see the GCWR listed.

Should I be worried, I'm 180 lbs over my GCWR of 16,000lb?

Friends of ours (wife and me) got around a 35' triple slider and tried pulling it with a V-10 Dodge. The terror of being driven by a trailer caused them to sell the entire rig and go for a 34' Coachmen Catalina with a Cummins diesel pusher.

They are vey satisfied with the grunt of the Cummins in a motorhome wrap. The Honda (Accord) tows very nicely, too.

The <a href=http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/news/supercrewzer.html target=_blank>Ford extreme super crew</a> is the rig for one of those portable homes.

I have my problems with the idiots around here doing doubles. They allow 25' 5'ers and an RV trailer (boat, MC, etc. ) towed behind. 65 feet of ignorance is bliss... .

NVR FNSH,

I am not sure that the laibility would rest with the RV Dealer. i remember a few years back, we recived some letter from the hitch manufacturers about their high capacity hitches. When the large, up to 14,000 lbs, Titan sytle came out, we were told that were we not liable for the customer. It is the customers responsibility to know the cacapcitys of their tow vehicle. We likened it to the fact that a vehicle will do 100+ mph, but it is not legal to do so.

Anyhow, tyring not to ramble, the aft axle capacities of the truck made today prohibit the ability to fully use the capacity of the hitch. The majority of larger 5th wheel/gooseneck hitches also exceed the fore axle ratings for our trucks.

Which brings me to this scenario. We had a customer with a new Ford Super Duty. He was in to check his truck after he was a GCW of 35,000 lbs. He trashed the transmission and melted the hangers for the exhaust pipe. What do you do for that idiot????

Barry,

Keep us updated on this when it happens. Should be good for a laugh!:D

Do you have a web site for the business?

Hey - here's some news. My buddy has a 2001 Chevy 3/4 ton w/ tow package, 4:10's, an automatic and the 6000 motor. He hooked it to my 7ton GVW gooseneck the other day to haul a 7,000 pound tractor. The trailer weighs about 4. 5k empty.

Odds are Mr. know-it-all won't even make it out of your yard with the size trailer you describe. With just my trailer, my buddy's truck was close to reversing the rear springs:eek:   .

With about 11,000 pounds behind her, she evidently had some heating up going on to stay at highway speeds. After his trip (just 20 miles or so), he told me - 'I think I'll be borrowing your rig next time or I'll trade up to the Duramax and a 1-ton' (he's still a Chevy guy - oh well).

Are you going to take pictures while he's dropping the gooseneck on the truck????

I'd like to see them if you do. - Anyone else?

I had a Y2K Chevy 3/4 ton with the 6000 Gas motor.

My website with pics of my Chevy

Sure was a hotrod, I raced a few Cummins powered Dodges, and traded in the truck with a perfect winning streak. (about 4-0)

The Chevy had such a tall first gear it seemed to simulate "turbo lag".

I towed a heavy tractor, I say around 7-8K and it pulled quite well, although I think the truck "put on a front" rather than showing it's real guts.

All I can really say about the Chevy 6. 0Litre motor with the automatic is that, it's a real hot-rod truck. I went through 6 rear tires in less than 12 months. (Lots of tire smoke, and plenty of intersections, corners, and stoplights with my "signature" through them) :) <BG>

P. S. Heh, I'm really loving the Music my Cummins makes, compared to the electric motor sounding Chevy.

Yep, we get our annual rain fall in about a month and a half.

We got 3" about a week ago, and then another 1" yesterday.

They got the truck stuck in what used to be the lake. (Falcon Lake)

The Chevy is a 1979 3/4 ton, 4x4 it's a 4-speed if I remember right, the truck has about 16,000 miles on it.

He put headers and a sound system in it, and has exerimented with all types of exhaust setups.

Right now he has off-brand flowmasters, with turn down tips right after the headers, before that, he had open headers, and before that he had 6" glasspacks, w/true duals, that is what he has in the pics. Sounded Like firecrakers at WOT! Hurt anybodys ears too.

(Just about like my truck, LOL, his was still louder)

He got stuck in the "lake" because of three things,,

1. They went in with 4wd, and with speed

2. All differentials are open.

3. The didn't want to keep trying to get un-stuck, for fear of water in the Cab, remember the truck has close to 16K. (Rather new, for a '79)

:) That's the story.
