You ARE the king Tugboat. Who would have thought screwing up the tensioner would have brought such notariety.

This isn't just working on a CTD right? Well I was working at a golf course when I was about 15, and we used a golf cart to take out the trash. You know that big belt that eventually catches once the engine starts turning fast enough on gas carts? Well it had become loose on the trash cart, and we were still using it. You had to raise up the seat and tap the belt (from the topside) with your finger to get it to catch so the cart would move. Well, the last time I drove it, I made the mistake of tapping the belt from the bottom side. Big mistake, finger went through the pulley, tore the nail bed completely loose, but didn't tear the nail loose. The blood building up underneath that nail was the 2nd or 3rd most painful thing I've ever experienced ( I won't tell you about # 1 and 2). Lost the nail, and learned a valuable lesson at a young age.

lets see there was the 2 week old blazer I totaled in the parking lot at 18, the gear box ruined at 14 on the only combine running during heat of harvest season and on and and on

mistakes

This thread is a really good one and deserves a bit more time at the top. I wanted to add my latest goof up to the list so- - -

Had a noise that I thought was a ujoint. Had a local shop take the shaft down and I looked at it and didn't catch the fact that the front joint was freezing up. Everything else seemed ok. Still had noise and pretty soon a noticable clank when going from forward to reverse and vise-versa.

Having ruled out the drive shaft, I decided to look into the diff. Some slack so thought I would put bearings. Or at least reset the preload. As I was removing the drive shaft, I felt the clank in the front joint. Replaced the joint. Refilled the diff and drove to Tenn. I will do the diff soon but all is well for now.

Moral of the story is, do ALL your own service. There is no substitute for hands on when it comes to keeping these older trucks on the road.

Ok, I admit it. I installed one side of my lower door hinge backwards when I did my door pins..... bent the @#%* outta my fender and couldn't get the door back open without making it even worse. Hahahaha it was a long day... shoulda waited. NOTE TO SELF: when you're tired and your truck runs leave the little stuff until you aren't so tired

OK, I didn't do this one but it's just too good not to share. A woman I was dating for 3 years had a less than intelligent ex- hubby. He decided to save her a little money and change her oil for her. He drained the transmission and overfilled the engine... then took it for a drive and toasted the transmission and spilled oil for about 2 miles. I got a good belly laugh. Same guy that tried to install his own telephone wiring in the attic and stepped through the sheetrock 13 TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UMmmmmmmmmmmmm after the first time you'd think he would figure out that ya gotta walk on the 2x4's hahahahahahahahaha

This woman wasnt with him long enough to help him reporduce and further pollute the gene pool, did she?

Did he have ANY ceiling left? :-laf :-laf :-laf

Oh, what the heck.

Thought I'd bump this back to the front page so you all could have a good laugh to start the new year!

By the way, I am no better now than before, in fact I'm starting into senility too!

Sounds like one of those home improvement projects where a case of beer is a prerequisite. Good to have some buddies involved too.

In other words, it could have been me... BC. :)

I've done this work for 30 years so i know better , but I am having senior type moments with this crap eating away at my brain. Putting new rings and bushings in my turbo. the turbine shaft nut is left hand thread. couldn't break the nut loose ( I was turning it the wrong way) I did a major no-no and put the impact wrench to it and twisted the turbo shaft in two. cost me 175$ for a new shaft and 3 days down time waiting for it.

Been There, Done that. Not enough room to CONFESS here. Lets just say that I dont throw rocks at anyone and I dont laugh when someone else has a bad day! GregH

NOW THIS THREAD IS WHAT SEPARATES THE 1ST GENS FROM THE REST.
I was checking the end play in my turbo with my middle finger on my left hand, while it was running. Sucked it in and wacked the tip 3-4 times. It made my finger look like a twisty soft serve ice cream cone. You should have seen the looks from the Dr. and the nurses at the ER. "You did what... ???" (I'm fine, really, it was just the very tip)
I like to think that there is still a tiny bit of my middle finger in the engine that I can give to people when they aggravate me.
