Would anyone be interested in a precision in-truck dyno to measure HP and Torque if one was available at a reasonable cost?

I started a project that I used on a AA/FD to tune it on the drag strip.
You tell it some basic information and it senses rpm, speed, acceleration, etc and gives you a readout of HP and torque per each 100 rpm increment.
I used the breadboard/PC version for several years on the dragster and other street cars. The results it gave tracked dyno results.
I thought someone might have such a device out by now, but the closest I have found is the G-Tech. A very nice unit that gives you a lot of information, but not HP and torque at all operating rpms.
If their is interest in it, I will revive the project.

I'm a EE at Lucent Technologies. Inc.

I think I could put in on the street for about $150.

It would provide HP and torque at all rpms.

I want to have a cheap way to evaluate changes I'm going to make on my new Ram and I thought others might be interested in such a device also.

I would buy one to use for the product reviews.

Also, I think this subject should probably be in the Products Forum, so I will move it over there.

Bmann,
I would be interested in the dyno you are talking about. Let us know if you revive the project. Thanks

I would be interested as well. Once my truck is out of warranty I would like to do some modifications but always like to be able to measure the results.

All,

I have had enough interest that I have priced the pasts and as I thought I will be able to offer the tester in the $150-$160 price range.

Battery operated, with a DC power option.
Require NO connection to any part of the vehicle.
Measure HP and Torque at all RPMs.
Provide peak HP and Torque readings at the rpm they occure.
Provide HP and Torque in 10 rpm increments.
Store up to 20 tests.
Store vehicle parameters without having to re-set each time the unit is powered on.
Up load data to a P/C so graphs can be printed.

I will be looking for a few sucke... , er volunteers to test the unit. They will receive the tester at 1/2 price. And will be able to exchange the test units for a production unit at no charge.
I plan to offer the tester to TDR members at 1/3 off for a limited time when the unit is ready.
I also plan to have a web site where user reading are store in an online database so new users can compare their readings with others and see what changes to the truck produce what results. The site will be http://www.ThisOFFICE.com/pdyno. The site is up now.

If you have an idea for a feature not listed on the web site, email me and I'll add them if possible.

Thanks for all the email and interest.

More later.

Thanks for all the emails and suggestions. Keep them coming.

Or you can email me at bmann@lucent.com

I plan to send Rob one of the first so he can do a review.

Sounds great, Ben Too good to be true. I wish there were a simple way to meter fuel used between oil changes. I think that would be a better gauge of when to chang oil than just miles.

The h#** with Rob, he has no horsepower to measure! Give me me me the console dyno, and I'll review it (positively of course). And not only that but I will guarantee my first order will be for 1000 units since the newly formed Ram Runners will need something to benchmark their performance before and after they install the "Blue Box".

Follow the money trail bro!

Aaahhh, sorry about that MR. Spading. The Ram Runners won't need a dyno anyway to measure the massive power of the Blue Box. Just press the pedal and count the smiles!

He he he heeeee

Well Tlippy there is a way- I have seen it at the show in columbus. The INSITE software can tell how much fuel you used the maximum speed the truck was driven, idle time percentage, duty cycle distribution, all the things you are glad the police do not have on thier cruisers. All it needs is the proprietary software from cummins and a interface box. Unfortunately the product is aimed for fleet managers not motorheads who might back engineer it. Cmechanic probably has more details and more accurate ones but there is a "gag" order in effect.
