Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) End of the powerjoke?

Hello all,

I seem to be experiencing the infamous intermittent dead pedal. A lengthy explanation to my problem may be helpful to cure to my problem from the helpful members at tdr. So here it goes.

I have a 2002 HO 6spd. X-Monitor, Bosch Marine injectors, stock HX35 turbo cranking 35-37psi boost. A fass system which seems to hold lower than talked about pressures (10-10. 2 at idle and 6. 5-8. 7 WOT) 5" exhaust run threw a donaldson muffler, AFe Mega Cannon air system and a Western Diesel 60hp fuel/timing module and a boost elbow.

Driving normally, I experience intermittent dead pedal, seeminly more after deacceleration to reacceleration. Codes without dash light lit: 0522 and 1693.

Tonight on the way to work, on a steep grade and while overtaking a power-choke. :D ... pyro 990deg, fuel pressure 6. 9-7psi, boost 36. 5 at 3000rpm... . WHAM, dead!! then just as fast as it went dead, it came back to life. This continued the entire pull.

Seems that the mighty cummins will run up to 2800 in a hearts beat then takes forever to get over that slump.

I understand that Western Diesel has gone out of business or has sold out and my couriosity is weather the codes im setting is because of the module, Vp pump, throttle sensor or none of the above.

I am all ears. . all help is greatly appreciated. I am currently looking at a pdr hx40 turbo and pulse flow maniflold however, I would like to cure my current problem before continuing.

I thank everyone in advance for any information to my cure.

Dan

p0522: dead oil pressure sending unit.

They are about $80 from cummins and require a deep 1 1/8" 6pt socket to change. Not hard, but you need long arms. That will fix the 0522 problem. You can see this in the oil pressure gauge on the dash. It is probably below the half way point all the time and does not move in relation to engine speed.

Which FASS do you have? I would assume the FASS-2 because of the lower fuel pressure. FASS sells different regulator springs which will increase the fuel pressure from the unit. Have the pressures changed from when you first installed the FASS? If so, I would suspect a clogged filter, clogged fuel pickup line, or a collapsed fuel line.

About the dead accelerator, you can try and reset the APPS. Just do a search for resetting APPS in this forum. You will find all the instructions you will ever need.

It could possibly also be a dying VP44, but that is so expensive that you will want to do the aforementioned services first.

Hey Dan, If you are only getting this dead pedal at 2700+ rpm, you' re bumping into the factoy ECM's defueling. Somewhere between 2700-2800 rpm the computer starts defueling until you get to redline (3200rpm I believe). Marco's MadECM eliminates a good bunch of this, as well as the DRAG version of the Edge Comp (5x5 setting only).

Dead pedal

First I would like to thank those who responded to help me. I do appreciate all the help.

To break the news, I took my truck to ProFormance Fuel Injection. The Experts there showed me that there are not only PCU codes but ECU codes as well.

After showing me how to check the ECU codes(a fatal 0216 combined with a 1693), and after completing a couple other test, the bad news came to me like: "the VP is JUNK!"

A New one is on the way...

I was upset at first but then I thought for a while, got depressed, ate nearly a entire bag of the Diesel Shops candy then decided if I have to get a new pump, I might as well finish the job by replacing the western diesel box with EDGE... Order a pulse flow manifold and a Modified HX40 turbo and a aftermarket aftercooler. :D All will be in and installed Tuesday.

Once again... I would like to thank the TDR members for responding and the help. Any one of the answers received could have caused the problem I was having however, it was my fault I didnt go to the ECU mode and list the 0216 code. Thanks and thanks some more.

Dan

My VP took a @#$%

Previously posted similar dead pedal syndrome... Last three weeks intermittent occurrence app a dozen times. Searched codes and good old #216 showed up. From what some guys have said on this forum that you better have at least 8# wot they might be correct as regards diagnosing lift pump failure... mine for the last 6 months(after I installed fp gauge) went from 12-13 at idle to 10-11 at idle and from 8 wot to the past 2 months or so down to about 4. 5 psi wot. (standing on it for a block or so). Well took it to the dealer and they replaced lift pump, new one shows 15-16 at idle said the Tech... Cleared codes, took for a test run and they said still a little sub-par performance and 0216 reappeared! VP-44 is gone! Normally they have one on the shelf but had to call Chicago to send one up. Be here tomorrow and with a little luck I should be rollin for the weekend. First lift pump went out at 38,000 mi, truck wouldn't start one day. This time acted up as reported... All replaced under warranty.

P. S. I can't say enough about the Dealership. Great people, great service. Gave me a 2004 Chrys loaner. www.vandebran.com (Chilton, Wis. )

Hey Billy, good to hear they got you all fixed up. I am scheduled at the dealer today to have my truck hooked up to their computer to anylize the problems (I am sure they will find the same results as yours). Hope my dealership is as accomodating as yours was.

BTW, do you know if the replacement lift pumps are better than the factory installed pumps that are notoriously faulty?

Thanks,

Craig.

Good luck bigredcummins

Hope it works out for you too. Only downside for me is Chicago didn't have a vp-44 and dealer had to get it from some other place, won't have truck this weekend to pull the boat... and 2004 Chrysler they loaned me the air condtioner isn't cooling and it's been like 85 and humid! Man I hate drivin down the road with the windows down... with my hearing bad as it is... gotta crank the stereo up like them teeny boppers that play that wrap $&#t wide open so I can hear old Hank, Waylon, Willie, and the boys...

Bigredcummins,

WHat dealer are you using. I cant seem to find a good dealer up my way for anything. I live in Mexico, Missouri.

Lloyd Belt down in Eldon, MO. This is my third vehicle from Lloyd (first Chysler product since he purchased the dealership) and I have always had pretty good service. Although I should mention this is the first service I have had to have done to the Dodge  so I really can't say one way or the other for their service. Will keep you posted.

Greg is currently overseeing the service department. Give him a call.

Yep, just got it back yesterday evening, with new lift pump and vp44 installed. :-laf Everything looks great, they did a great job.

Planning to make a call to Genos real soon to get a fp guage ;) .

Got 'er back too!

Finally got my truck back today, felt good to ride the old gal again! :) Was without her for a week. New lift pump and VP-44 under warranty. Seems injector pump which they normally stock was ordered from Chicago supplier which in turn didn't have one so it was ordered from Detroit and shipped Monday but the brown truck took three days to get here with it(And they want to race the truck! They must be kidding. ) I asked the dealership how many CTD's they sold last year which they replied 65-70(Used to sell one every 4 days on average). Asked them how many injector pumps they change out to which they replied about one a month.

Somebody has a poll on here ref how many are on their original VP-44. I think we should have a poll that asks: How many lift pumps replaced since you had your truck and app. mileage. , how many VP-44's changed on your truck and app. mileage... and under warranty or not. This is a serious matter and if not covered by warranty gets expensive. Dodge should be made to put a retro-fit pump kit on all the 2nd generation trucks not just put on another POS fuel transfer pump like originally equipped.

Dear Senator: We 20,000+ Dodge owners would like to bring your attention to a poorly designed pos component installed on new Dodge Trucks built in years 1998 -2002. It seems... ... . :( :--) :--) :--) :--) :--)

Big red,

Do you think they would be as good to me down there, even though i did not buy the truck from them? Did you buy your truck there and how many miles did you have. I sure appreciate your help. Nice to have a fellow TDR guy close.

Wile E.

I did buy my truck down there. Replaced the vp44 and lp at 59,000 miles. Is your truck still under warranty? If so, I would think they would be inclined to provide service even if you didn't purchase it there, especially if it is stock. They have an 800 number (800. 299. 3715) so it wouldn't cost you anything to at least call and see if they are willing to check it on their computer.

They are really nice people to deal with so I think they would treat you good.

Hope this helps and I agree, it is nice to have resources on TDR. Without this forum I would probably still be driving on the old pump and pulling my hair out trying to figure out the cause.

Bigred,

My truck should still be under warranty,

i have 63k miles and it is a 2002, also it is bone stock. Do you have a service writer that you spoke with there that you could recomend? thanks

Greg is the service manager and could probably help you out. If he is not there they will probably put you in touch with Shane or Brandon, but I would ask for Greg first.
