Hi All,

First Gen owner, trying to help out remote pal with '05 2500 automatic 4WD, all stock, about 230,000 miles, routine maintenance. A few weeks ago he noted some "shaking" and had P codes 2146, 0202 and 1740 (Torque Converter Clutch or OverDrive Solenoid Performance). I did some reading on injector bank 1, and 1740, which I understand generally means there is a difference in RPM that shouldn't be, because of a bad O/D clutch, torque converter slipping or not working properly, or a bad connection or wire...a few people noted it can be caused by an engine DTC (like 0202 and 2146 above) and this seems reasonable to First-Generation me because if an injector wasn't operating correctly the "spike" in engine RPM might fool a sensor downstream to measure slippage.
I suggested he check the wiring around valve cover, AC compressor, control module, batteries, connections and so on. No obvious problems found.
He had his shop that rebuilt the transmission a few years ago check it out and they can find nothing wrong with the transmission--and it does operate as usual. The truck has thrown no further codes since they popped up and were reset a month ago, and a can of injector cleaner (unidentified) had a minor smoothing effect, but the shaking is still there, perhaps getting worse. The truck is said to start normally, shakes more when it's cold, you can hardly feel any shaking on the road, and mileage that used to show 20-21 now shows 17-19.
I don't have the FSM but do have electrical diagnostics pages for 2146 and 0203 (I figure it's the same process for 0202) and curious where would you guys start. Follow the electronic diagnosis for Injector 2, some short-cut for testing it, just assume with some degree of confidence the #2 injector is ready for replacement (and do all of them at once), or...?

Not sure I understand your question. You should diagnose the P0202 before attempting to diagnose the P2146. Be very careful if you are front probing the connectors. Never try and insert the DVOM probe straight into the terminal. Always GENTLY come in at an angle and just barely touch the terminal. I have seen to many technicians cause a problem that wasn't there by jamming a meter probe into a terminal.
 
If stock means also stock fuel filtration then your friend is long on borrowed time with 230K on the Injectors.
Run a tank with stanadyne or equivalent and see if it helps.

And yes, replace all Nails at the same time, like the Batterys.
 
Injectors are done and likely hanging. Tell him to STOP driving it at any speed, the tendency to either fill the crnak case with fuel or melt a piston is high once the injectors get so bad it is shaking. Keep in mind, NEW injectors only for replacements. Do NOT let shops tell you new are not available, they are. If they try to charge him more than $420 per injector for new Bosch production injectors go elsewhere or order online.
 
Sort of what I expected. Thanks for the verification/input everyone. I'd send him to Geno's for injectors until someone tells me otherwise.

As much as I hate to say, no. Geno's only has reman injectors and do not recommend that. Any Bosch authorized dealer can get new but most price themselves out of the market. Places like Engineered Diesel, Injectors Direct, Diesel Auto Power, etc., do a large volume business on new injectors so you get the benefit of volume discounts. You will want part #0445120238 for the OE injector for an 05. Part #0445120255 is the 143 degree spray pattern from the early trucks and will work quit well also. Part #0445120254 should be the marine injector, about a 50 HP increase comparable to stock.
