I have had this problem for 2 years now. It started out once in a while truck would start to miss and lose power I would shut truck off, restart and problem gone. Now when I start it has knock in the pump that comes and goes, when it dies after a minute or so I hear what sounds like a solenoid releasing in the pump. Also is fuel solenoid to engage when key is turned on? Also when this knocking problem is happening engine wants to run away if you try to give more fuel.

Thanks

Ok the shut off solenoid should full retract when you bump the starter/engine over. It should stay retracted in the key on "run" position. It should not retract with key on, until the ign switch has been to the start position. It should release and fall dwon when the key is in the off position.

If it's not staying retracted, perhaps the hold coil is bad or you have bad connections intermittantly (a bad ground might cause this).

On the "run-away" the governor comes to mind, but if your shut off solenoid was "fritzing" out (moving some while the engine was running) perhaps this or other things is causing the run-away you are describing.

Good luck and let us know what the resolution to your prob is.

Problem Solved

Thanks for the replies from all, after talking with local diesel pump repair shop we narrowed it down to scored barrels in pump, caused by who knows what. They thought bad fuel possible.

Again thanks for replies and e-mails.
