I know y'all are probably tired of this issue, but I have to ask.

I changed my fuel filter and didn't fill the can with diesel, I was just going to let the pump fill it. Anyway now the can is about half full and I cant hear the lift pump running. So now its not running. With my wife cycling the key, I can feel the relay clicking on and off but no noise from the pump. Am I missing something or should I get a new pump. Sorry for the old subject and I did search and read but am still hesitant.

Have you tried the slight bump of the starter and then listening for the pump to free run for 25 seconds? FYI, if you are not familiar with this procedure, you just bump the starter for a split second, not enough to start the engine (if the engine will even start in the current condition) this cycles the pump to run and prime the filter housing, etc.

If you do this and the pump does not run then you probably need to start investigating why.

If you bump the starter ,but not start the engine the pump should run foe about 25 seconds. I would unplug the connection at the pump and with the key on make sure you have 12 volts there . If you do then the pump is bad. Some people have tapped the pump with a wrench or light hammer and it will run long enough to get the engine started . hope this is of some help.

Yes, I am following the procedure in the Haynes and it says the same thing. I have tried bumping the key and listening for the pump quite a few times and no luck. I guess it came on the first time as the filter can is half full of fuel. Is Napa an OK place to get a replacement?

I wouldn't waste any money on a factory style. Airtex makes a inexpensive replacement. The jury is still out on how good they are. My father-in-law's has lasted quite a while. If your truck is stock, its probably fine. If you have mods, go with an airdog or fass. That was my best money spent in a long time. I don't think anyone on here who have them will say otherwise. Also, Airdog now has a lifetime warranty!

Check your fuses. There is probably a fuse on the hot wire between the relay and pump. If you have a volt meter or test light see if you got voltage at the pump. Glenn

i am going here at lunch today and getting one:

Cummins Southern Plains Ltd

3250 North Fwy

Fort Worth, TX 76111

(817) 624-2107

the guy said $155 plus banjo washers $3 and a new pigtail $18

i guess i will upgrade to a more reliable aftermarket unit when i am not so pressed for time.

I put on a Airtex pump friday and so far so good, I have a gauge under the hood and a low psi light inside, it idles at 20 psi.

I got it from Advance Auto Parts for $159. 00 and it has a 1 year warranty. Good thing about getting it from them if it goes out they will just replace it (so they say)

Hey JLandry, I've been told that to make the Airtex pump last the longest it can I need to put a small pre-filter in the line, my ? is what kind and where (if you did this) or anyone else. Sorry did not mean to hijack this thread.....

i started another thread because i really need help,911 fourmbut wnated to also ask here to my 2nd gen bretheren

I just finished putting it in and it doesn’t come on. I tested for voltage at the pump plug and it reads 4 volts. Is this correct? If this is low, what could make it 4 volts. And the relay is a little warm.

Thank you for replies.

I think the AirTex installation instructions require you to use a prefilter in order to preserve their warrantee.

No I didn't install one myself... although I do agree that it's a good idea for the health of the pump. At the time I was installing my AirTex I didn't fell like cutting my factory fuel line from the tank. Now at some point I plan to relocate the lift to the frame rail, and at that time I'll go ahead and install a prefilter system. In the mean time I'm keeping my fingers crossed and am rely on the fuel pickup screen inside the tank... and I also carry a spare AirTex pump just in case.

Best regards,

John L.
