Tire Load Range Ratings

The Boy is giving his new dump a good workout these days. 27k combined is a bit over the 26k allowed in TX. Looks like he needs an endorsement to be "LEGAL". His 3500 SRW LB Limited with AISIN handles the load well.

Confusion here. 26,000 actual weight isn't what a driver's license criteria is based on. GCWR over 26,000 requires a class A license in TX. However, if you are willing to pay the fee a pickup can be registered for as much weight as you want. So, the loophole is, if the truck is registered for 30,000 pounds but the total combination of GVWRs of the truck and trailer (GCWR) is 26,000 or less he wouldn't need a class A. There isn't any law that says you can't exceed the GVWR of the truck or the trailer.

I understand he can tow what he wants if licensed for the weight and his tires are rated to do so. From what I understand in TX if towing OVER 26k combined one needs an endorsement to do so. Is this NOT the case?

No, it is all based on GCWR, just like the CDL. TX has a non-commercial class A that parallels a CDL-A. The only difference is you don't need a med card. Most states require a CDL-A for GCWR over 26,000 because thy are too lazy to implement a non-commercial license. Some states exempt RVs but not cargo trailers used for personal use. The bottom line is that the actual weight means nothing when determining the type of drivers license that is requires. If the GVWR of the pickup plus the GVWR of the trailer equals more than 26,000 pounds a Class A license is required. Endorsements for CDLs is a completely different animal.

No problem. You might also pass on that if he is caught with an insufficient license it isn't just a ticket and drive away. The trailer will be parked (possibly impounded) and won't move until someone with the correct license class arrives.

Keeping the load down won't make a difference if he is stopped and checked. The trailer could be empty. I delivered Nick's last dump trailer. When I accepted the load I wasn't aware of the trailer GVWR. Fortunately the route to his house didn't have any weigh stations that were open.

So the weight ratings exceeding 26k is where it matters?

Cleaned up around here yesterday and today. Hauled a dump load of scrap to the scrap yard and made $33, then again today for $17, 2.5 ton total. Breakfast was $23 yesterday and $24 today so we had a net of $3.00:D

Looks good now, next will be moving some dirt and a tree, then some gravel. Should make a nice parking lot for the trailers.

T-Bones for breakfast, Nick?:D

Might need a hot shot truck again. My son is looking at a 102" x 32', Diamond C flatbed with 12k axles in Indiana, 26k gvw. I can't find any, they are really rare. I really like the Fleetneck Gooseneck and engineered beam main frame, it what I like so that is what I recommended:D

Nick, have you tried The Trailer Store, in Winnemucca, NV?

I will go look, Tom. Are they a Diamond C dealer? I want him to stay away from Big Tex, PJ and Kaufman because they cut out the side rail for the wheel wells, makes a weak spot. Diamond C and Load Trail do not.

He is also looking at a '18 5500 in Texas, maybe he can make it a package. He wants me to go but there is a virus out there, Lol.

Yes, Nick, I saw a video where a youtuber picked one up there. Seemed to know a thing or two about Diamond C.

Ripped up a tree and moved some dirt for the parking lot. I didn't want the stump in the middle, so I dug it up some and pushed it out, root wad and all. Starting to take shape. I think I will spread red cinders, thinking it will look better than gravel, the same color as the ground.

He went ahead and moved on this 18' Tradesman, 5500, 4.44 gears with 25K miles. He said the trailer will have to wait a bit, lol

They will deliver it for no charge, they made the offer. 950 miles to Quemado, NM. where he will be working all next week. They said they will see him on Monday.
