I first found this forum in 2003 after I bought my used 2001 2500 QC CTD. It had 120,000 miles on it when I bought it in Dallas. I still have that truck, now it has 260,000 miles and still gets up and pulls anything I put behind it. BUT, the cab isn't big enough now, my kids are 10 and 11 and only getting bigger. AND, the 4th gen's have nice big 4 doors and a roomy cab. MY 2001 has NO smog B.S. the 2014 is FULL of exhaust crap. MY 2001 rides like it has NO suspension, the 2014 rides better than my wifes 300C,( I love the coil springs). So....what do I do? I'm not fan of the body of the 3rd gen's, and the cab isn't all that much bigger than mine. My 2001 gets 16-17 mpg all day long, how is it in the 4th gen? How many problems are you guys having with the exhaust filters? In 2001 the autotrans was crap, how are the new 6 spds holding up? I REALLY want a new truck for the cab space, and I guess I will have to put up with the emissions bull crap. And the 800 ft lbs of torque would be nice. So is it worth it? Any and all advice is welcomed. Thanks.

IMHO, if you go 2013 and above, with DEF, you will be happy as far as smog goes. The pulling power stock is second to none. The 68 RFE has/had some shifting quirks from the factory, "flare" between gears. Its a good transmission and is rated to 30K GCVWR with 4:10 gears.

If you want the bullet proof cummins ,go 3500 with the AISIN transmission. 850trq,370HP. Beyond that, once you switch, you'll never look back.

You will LOVE the 4th gen truck's Hand's down way above what you have now . had a 08 and went too a 11 and WOW what a difference . and then now the newer truck's are even better . the 6 sp trans is very good guy's have well over 400,000 and still going strong .Don't sweat the smog stuff .it's not as bad as everyone think's it is . these truck's were designed to run with the stuff on the Motor you won't hurt it. Get the Truck out every now and then and Stretch it's leg's out and you will be Golden .

I upgraded my 2001 to a '15 last month for exactly the same reasons, even down to our kids being exactly the same age and needing the space. The new trucks are everything everyone says they are. Seems like over the past couple model years they finally have the emissions stuff sorted out, which plagued late 2000's trucks, which lead to the whole "truck delete" phenomenon which caused many of us 2nd gen truck owners to sit back and make claims such as "this is why I'll be buried in my 2nd gen truck and will never have to deal with that". Well, I for one have now come out of the woodwork now that the emissions are sorted out, and have made the upgrade. You should too. Life is good over here on the dark side. We have cookies. :D

I had a 94 and an 06. Both had 5.9 I have had a 14 for a year. It is a 3500 mega 6.7 cummins with 68rfe the truck fit' finish and interior is light years ahead of my 06. The 94 is like comparing a VW to a Porshe, Best looking and running Rams yet! All 3 makers have to run the smog garbage but the reliability factor keeps improving. T0 sum it up you will definitely enjoy the new rid

Couldn't have said it better.

See the sig.

My 2014 Ram makes my old truck seem like, well; and old truck. (previous was a 2004 CTD SLT 4X4)

Wonderful ride and drive, plenty of power and room and creature comforts that make the whole experiance; great.

Do not have the Aisin and frankly the complaints of the new transmission are much ado about nothin' IMHO.

Best vehicle I've ever owned.

After 1.5 years still love it.

Loved my '01. Had it for 14 yrs. Did lots of research and stay closely connected to this forum. When I got my '14, it was light years ahead of the '01. It's roomy, fun to drive and even more fun why I tow! You won't regret the upgrade.

Went from a 2005 to a 2011 and still loving the choice. Both trucks basically 4 door, dually 4*4 loaded up Laramie and black on black. We need the full size cab for our now 8 year old plus a 85# Rottie.

My 2011 will roll over 90K this weekend.

Looking to get a 2016 or 2017 when some business property sells. (For the added GVW 14k since we have a heavy Truck Camper and tow heavy too.)

Yep, the 14,000 GVWR is something that interests me also. I've owned four Lance truck campers since the mid-80s and have never been below the truck's GVWR. 14,000 lb. GVWR would make the first time the hauling weight would be below the truck's GVWR.

Bill, Love your co-pilot's picture. We have and English Cocker who sits on the center console while I navigate in town. His "Handle" is "Little Lord Ramsbottom" from the embossed Ram on the console. He loves the truck too. Greg

Greg,
Thanks! She's a rescue Dachshund from a kill shelter in Houston, TX. We've had her for 7 years and she's about 10 years old as best as we can tell. She rides in her "doggy" car seat that's secured with the seat belt and her harness is also secured with the seat belt to prevent her being thrown around in case of a panic stop. Her car seat safely elevates her to be able to see outside while we travel. You are right, she loves to travel and taking long walks once we arrive at a destination.

Every generation of Dodge Cummins truck has been a quantum leap from the previous for me. I am on my 7th Ram and the 2013 is by far the most impressive truck I have ever towed with. Does EVERYTHING better stock than my modified trucks did. I have the 68FRE trans and the 410 rear with 25000 towing miles I could not be happier.

Having owned a first gen, two second gens, and a 3rd gen, I agree. Each has been a quantum leap. I plan to make the quantum leap to a 4th gen, but I made a quantum leap last year for a new air conditioned cab Kubota tractor and I'm waiting until my bank account makes a quantum leap recovery. :D

I went from a 2003 to a 2015. I also needed more back seat room but most importantly more power towing. Hills just killed my old truck at WOT, the new truck just walks up them at only part throttle. Exhaust brake and tow mode take wear and tear off of both the truck and trailer brakes. I get a smile on my face every time I hitch up the 10k lb car trailer as it just tows so well compared to the 2003.

My only concern with the new truck is the emissions. The DEF fluid doesn't bother me in the least, it's a failure of the DPF that has me concerned (down the road).

My friend maintains a fleet HD and LT trucks. They've had exceptional service from the 13-14 def equipped Ram trucks. The Duramaxes are another matter. They keep going into limp mode he says and they end up at the dealer.

just brought a new to me 13 3500 CCSB 6.7 Laramie with the 6.7. I have a 99 CTD THAT I LOVE.. And a 2007 Duramax classic both of those trucks have been great I have worked both trucks very hard. The DW and I wanted something more plush found this 13 with 17000 miles and this truck is amazing so far.. I only have driven it 200 miles but it has been nice.. Good luck

Just bought a new 2014 DRW Laramie Edition to replace my 2006 that I gave to my son. I am amazed at all the finer details, smooth running and quiet ride. I could not be happier. The 2006 has 140,000 on her, and still going strong. Had my wife not convinced me to give the truck to my son, I might still be driving her. I am glad she persuaded me to by a new truck. Being a left over, it was a steal. As I said initially, I could not be happier with my choice. We've had trucks from an '89 W350, a '94, and '01 2500s, and the '06, all great trucks, this last is the finest thus far.
