Lost Muffler!!!

I straight piped my exhaust yesterday. I REALLY like the sound now while standing behind the truck. Has a real throaty sound now. I kept the resonator... ...



I can tell only a very slight increase in cab sound level. If someone had removed it for me without telling me and I was not "Listening" for it while in the cab, I don't think I would have noticed... ...



Man, is that stock muffler ever BIG!!!!

Did you use the Geno's "muffler elimination kit?



Have you noticed any weird harmonics at all such as a rumble at a certain rpm?



I'm thinking of doing the same to mine. I heard a straight piped truck the other day and it had that turbo whistle at idle. It sounded like a big rig

i too have send my muffler and resonator on permanent vacation. i love it and have no regrets. on the other hand, my father and most other people that don't ride in the truck say it is too loud. But i'm IN the truck, so it makes no difference to me!!

and at $45, can't beat that



about harmonics, at WOT, when i sweep past 2300 on the tach, i get a "stepped on cats tail" like sound, but it is gone as fast as it came... Like a sonic boom

I took mine off, and man what a improvement. Sounds like a real BIG RIG!

I used the eliminator from Geno's and left the resonator on for a long time. I now have a 4" exhaust, some may think I am crazy but I actually liked the sound of the truck without the muffler better than the way it sounds now. The 4" did help on the egt's while towing though. It did sound like a big rig with the muffler awol.

the best way to do it!

IMHO, the best sounding Cummins Ram I heard was at

the LSTDR rally in Kerrville last summer. I was

guessing that it was a 4" aftermarket system.

I was suprised to find out that the stock muffler

had been removed but the resonator was left in

place. By removing the muffler and

keeping the resonator, there is no drone at any

speed or RPM whatsoever. It's the sound that DC

should have tuned our exhaust to emit from the

factory! If you have been contemplating banishing

your muffler to the back of a storage room, go for

it! By leaving the resonator on, you also reduce

the risk of failing a state inspection if they

look for that kind of thing.

If ya want to hear what it sounds like, download this file

and turn up the volume a bit. It's a 5 meg file (huge) for dialup

connection (less than 56k) but if you have cable

or DSL no problem. Just right click on the file

and select "save as" and when the file is done

saving on your computer, note what directory it is

in, and play it from your computer for best

results. Otherwise the file may try to start

playing before it is completely downloaded and

you won't hear the whole thing.

I recently had my truck straight piped. I kept the resinator also. I cant tell the difference in the cab, but outside it sounds great. The only drone is when rpm's are at 1500 or less, and thats barely noticable.

The more I drive my truck without the muffler, the more I like it... . I can not hear any drone at all, but Hey, I have spent most of my adult life with my head stuck under the hood of a hot rod reving it up, so I may be a little hard of hearing... ...



I fabed my own pipe out of Sch 5 SST pipe. Even though the original muffler had a slight offset from inlet to outlet, a staight pipe will work just fine!



If you are on the fence about keeping the muffler or not, Just do it! You will not regret it... ... ...

Been wanting to do this to mine. And get rid of the stock crunched tailpipe while I'm at it. Thinking about getting a Walker tail pipe and straight piping from just ahead of the muffler to the new tailpipe.



My question is: You 2nd gen guys have resonators and I do not. Will I regret it? Too noisy with no res or muff?



I come from a racing background and don't mind the sound of a good loud exhaust at all, but I like to be able to roll up the windows and not hear it on a long highway drive.

Is this only for sound improvement, or is there a performance increase?

I have not noticed any difference with regard to

EGT or performance. I did mine "spur of the

moment", otherwise I would have done some baseline

tests the same day to see if EGT went down. It

does seem the EGT's are a little cooler, maybe

50F. And the turbo seems to spool up a

little quicker.

As for performance, there is no doubt about the

sound difference compared to stock, so when ya

mess with a stock Cummins Ram the driver knows

that something is different about your truck,

especially if there are gauges on the A-pillar

like mine .

I'd like to see a cut-away of the stock muffler

since I'm sure there is a considerable ammount of

backpressure with the stock muffler compared to

the straight pipe and straight thru resonator.

I removed both the muffler and the cat and noticed much better spool up, which of course, leads to better response. EGTs are bout 75-100* less than they were before. However, I did have 156k on the cat, so it wasn't exactly good as new.

I got a first gen and love my DUAL straights 3" out the sides behind the rear tires. I would really like to have dual fours though to lower my EGTS though. And to leave more room for tweaking.
