Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Trouble codes

Headed home from the station yesterday morning and noticed the 99 was sluggish. Fuel pressure is good at 12 psi (stock LP). Got home, hooked up to the boat and headed out, and it was still sluggish. Turned around, traded the 99 for the MegaCab and went & did my fishing...

TODAY: Started the truck, and the truck runs fine at idle, and easily goes from idle all the way up past 3000 RPMs. Back out, everything normal including fuel pressure, headed down the road, and the truck just doesn't want to go. Only builds about 6-8 psi boost, unless I put the accellerator to the floor where it only builds up to about 10 psi, but the RPMs won't climb past about 2000. Unplugged the Edge EZ and test drove, and no change. Checked and can't find a boost leak anywhere either. Did an APPS reset, and little or no change.

The only thing I CAN'T confirm is that the wastegate is stuck OPEN. Im unable to move the rod manually in either direction (and according to the guy at River City Turbo in Little Rock, I shouldn't be able to).

I also noticed that the truck wants to shift very quickly through second gear. The EGT's dont go past about 700 either. Checked and no codes were presented or stored either.

I'm at a loss here. I've fiddled with it all day and still can't determine the problem. Would REALLY appreciate some new ideas!

Thanks

Craig

If the turbo is the source of the problem you would be making a fair amount of black smoke and EGT would be high for the amount of power it's making. I doubt your turbo is the problem, if you can't move the rod then I'm pretty sure the wastegate is being held shut.

If no black some then something must be making it defuel. How high does RPM rise in lower gears?

I would start with the MAP sensor (check connection, clean it, etc. ) and might as well check the IAT sensor too, and then maybe try disconnecting the batteries for an hour or two then resetting the APPS again after that.

Does it run rough at all, is power delivery erratic, that kind of thing, or just really weak?

No black smoke... Rpms only go slightly above 2000 when I get on it, but will shift around 15-1600 if slowly. No rough running, nothing erratic, just weak. And as mentioned before, ONLY when under load. In neutral and park, I can easily go from idle to 3000+ RPMs. Is there an easy way to check the map sensor and Iat sensor on the truck?

no easy way to check those... you will need a voltmeter at min... . really need scan tool so u can see if the apps is going into 2nd mode of fueling or if the timing in the pump is stuck... .

What can I do?

I have a voltmeter. How can I test those two sensors with it? Check resistance across them? I'd much rather pull them and test them, than replace one or the other and hope for the best.

I don't have access to a scan tool... So, I'd love to start with checking those sensors. If anyone can tell me how to do that.

Thanks

Craig
