Making a electric over hyd. brake unit out of an ABS pump?

I'm cheap and don't want to spend $600 to $1200 for an electric hydraulic brake actuator.

Seems like I could possibly make one out of an ABS pump. I don't know much about ABS pumps though.

Comments... .

Thanks.

Well it looks like there is no pump in an ABS unit so I guess it won't work.

Anybody have any other idea about 12 hydraulic pumps that could work for applying brakes or am I going to have to start saving up for a commercial unit?

I agree. . start saving. I'm in the same situation and am comparing three units, Brakerite, Titan and Carslile. Made some calls last week and waiting for them to send test data. They all claim to be the best.....

hmmmm. . there has to be a pump in an ABS system or you would shortly run out of brake fluid when the ABS turns on...

this could get pretty complicated though, typically the pump only returns fluid to the master cylinder (which is actually creating the pressure to actuate the brakes). However in a vehicle with traction control I believe the pump will actually supply line pressure to the brakes.

I am not sure how to make the electrical side of it work though.

I can ask our ABS guru if you'd like.

Dexter Axle also makes an elec/hydraulic unit. bg

I'll add Dexter to the list.

A traction control module would have a pump... . not sure if an ABS module has one. Traction control modules actually add braking to control wheel spin.....

That is what I thought but they never mentioned it in the sites I read on the net. They did mention an accumulator. I just don't understand how they could relieve pressure without you foot eventually dropping to the floor.

Please ask the guru!

better brakes unless youve got some tips for me???? my trucks brakes are horrid! i already have the 11/8 wheel cylinders, 12x3 shoes and 4 NEW masters. my next try is EGR 12x3 shoes and pads.

If you buy an elec/hydraulic unit, please take my advice, and get a top of the line brake controller to drive it with -- I like the BrakeSmart, but the Jordan appears to be just as good. I don't beleive the Prodigy will work with the elec/hydraulic very well without some modification on the trailer end.

I converted from vac/hyd to elec/hyd on the same trailer, and was ready to convert back to vac/hyd due to proportioning issues, until I upgraded to a BrakeSmart Controller. I had very frustrating problems with a Tekonsha Voyager. That being said, if you're running roughly the same weight, it's not as bad. In my case I might pull into a place with a gross of 18,000 and pull out with a gross of 32,000... . so you can see the proportioning problems... .

I have a trailer with elec/hydraulic brakes and a Prodigy controller. I have not made a trip with the Prodigy, tried it once but it showed the trailer was not connected. Why won't it work and who makes/sells the Brakesmart? bg
