Good Dodge Mechanic in N. Alabama?

Hey andy, on the welding helment, just make sure its not mfg'd by jackson, i went through three in a year, then bought a speedglass brand, pricey, but has been dependable for last three years, and has not gone through batteries. jackson had fair customer support , but an inferior product. if you're willing to come to auburntown, i can stick weld the alum. its not so pretty, but i have had excellent luck reinstalling transmission ears, cracked intakes, and even reinstalled the lower stud that mounts in the rubber on dad's intercooler. only drawback seems to be if the tab is attached to metal that shows on the outside, may leave discoloration on some shiny stuff that will have to be repolished or something.

wade, the transfers are pretty simple, most of them are common in function and design, i had mine apart when i replaced the input gear fot the 6-speed conversion. just be ultra careful and meticulous when resealing the case halves to avoid leaks, would be glad to help out, wonder if nick has any tips also? how did the 10 compare to the 11?

Has anyone got a MIG set up to weld Alum? I have a toolbox with the latch attachment broken. :( Couple of five little tacks should hold it. I'd just rivet it back together, but the attachment point is angled funny.

If your close to Gallatin a buddy of mine has a TIG welder and could fix you right up.

MAN, y'all are schoolin' me. I've never seen anyone weld metal except with a MIG and a spool gun. Sure enough, though, I found some TIG's that'll do it. Spendy little boogers too!

I've got a stick, but figured I'd burn it up trying to do it with that.

Hmmm.

Low Boost - Need Some Opinions

Ok guys - I hope some of you will follow me here and give some opinions.

I've got the HTB2 turbo installed that most guys are running at about 45psi. When I finally got my 60psi gauge installed, I really let it rip and saw that I could only get about 32psi and the temps were out of sight.

I called HTT and they then decided to tell me that their gauge was out of whack when my turbo was made. So I figured it was a wastegate problem and I got a manual boost controller.

I installed that thing yesterday and with it totally maxed out, I'm only getting 36-38psi on a hard run. It's supposed to increase boost up to 30psi over the wastegate setting.

So then I figured I had a boost leak. I took Mark's advice and tried to spray some starting fluid around the connections this morning but that did not indicate any leaks. The boots also *looked* ok, but I'll admit that I'm not an experienced inspector.

So what do you guys think? Do have a leak somewhere that I just didn't find? Is my turbo not functioning properly?

Everything else with the truck seems ok. I don't have excess smoke and when I do get on it, this turbo seems to be flowing enough air to clean up most of the smoke - all I really have is a gray haze.

And this sounds silly but I do have enough fuel to push this thing to 45psi, right? I figured a 200HP injector shouldn't have much trouble creating boost but I'm so confused I don't know what to think now.

I dunno - HELP!

Oh yeah, on a good note - the cam arrived today! :D I'm waiting on valve springs now, but I may go ahead and do the cam Thursday or Friday.

there is a little o ring that goes in between the charge air out of the turbo and the charge air 90 turning towards the intercooler. if that is missing or cut you can lose 5-10psi of boost. have you tapped the pump wire? or are you advancing the timing? How many miles? i would check on the passenger side of the intercooler the bottom 5 or 6 tubes have a problem with cracking and leaking right where the charge air enters the intercooler. good luck.

boost leak detect

Hey Hans, i fabbed up a pressurizer from a sheet metal piece and a tire valve stem to clamp into the factory rubber intake air hose. this will let you pressurize (with a tire air chuck) from the turbo intake through hoses/intercooler to the engine, only leaks past the rings slowly (rings are not a perfect seal) because both int and exh valves shouldn't be open at same time. this should give you time to detect any obvious leaks. using this method i've found a loose boot and two other leaks at the aforementioned o-ring seal (kinda tricky to line up and clamp in place). just a quick method to find larger leaks. hope this might help, good luck, rob.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm gonna tackle this problem tomorrow (I think it's gonna warm up some). I've made a duplicate of the apparatus below to check for leaks. I'll go around all connection points with some soapy water tomorrow and see if I have any luck that way (if I don't hear a leak first).

The valve springs arrived today - it's gonna have to wait until my cousin Todd gets over the flu because he wants to see and help with the install. Hopefully I'll have it done within 2 weeks.

Merry Christmas!!!

Well, since I will be out of town next week going to see my daughters, I wanted to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas to all of you and your families!!! I hope that you all have a great New Year's also!!! If I don't get another chance to get on here, I will talk to all of you again next year. Oo.

Has anyone heard about Gap's Dad lately? If I miss him on here, someone give him my best and let him know that I'm thinking about him and his family during this time. Thanks in advance!!!

The big brown truck just dropped off the clutch! That was quick! Tuesday AM to Thursday PM! Good thing too. Went to Nastyville today and the stocker is dying fast. It will be Tuesday or Wednesday before I can get to put it in. Got to go cut open a box! Oo.

Have you 24V guys been reading on Marco's Smarty? ;)

Need flywheel surfacing help. Who does a good job around here?

Tester

Hans, Your set up will work, but use with caution. If you'll notice where the charge air pipes connect to the engine and cooler there are lips to help hold the clamps on. We made a similar set up when I was with Cummins. We drilled several holes and put in some pop rivets to help hold the clamp on. Make a second one to use as a cap. Install one at the turbo and one at the intake and you can isolate the charged air system to check for leaks from turbo outlet to intake. Good luck and hope you find your problem. Hope we can get together at the meeting. I'm interested in hearing your opinions between before and after performance results on your latest injector and turbo upgrades.

Andy , What is your formula for carpet cleaner? Mine could use a cleaning.

I had mine ground at a machine shop on Myatt Drive in Madison. I think it was King's. I may be wrong on the name. If you want me to make sure I work right down from it. Let me know. I was told to make sure I had it ground on a flywheel grinding machine, not turned. Hamilton's turns them. John's my buddy and offered to do mine for cheap but I went with the grinder.

Hey Heavy if that doesn't work, me and you can split the CAC tester from Miller Special Tool LOL, I seemed to be having a similar problem with mine, let me know if the PVC works I was seriously considering buying that tester.
