I have an oil change comming due, and with winter comming on,I was wondering about using Mobil Delvac 1, 5w-40. It is rated CH-4 SJ Has anyone used this? I have been using Delo 400 15w-40 also rated CH-4 SJ and I'm happy with it but might be a bit thick in the winter.
What do you guys think?

John, I use Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in my truck during the winter months. Its also rated CH-4 SJ. Thinking this was kind of a "light" oil for the engine (Cummins does not recommend this weight oil) I had it tested. The test showed LESS wear particles than the 15W-40 oil. I fiqured it would have more because its lighter? AMSOIL GUYS?

I've used Delvac 1 for over 10 years and I'll swear by it. Ask my '86 350 6. 9 with 207,000 on it. I change the oil every 10 to 15,000 miles. If I get to it. Regards, bilford.

How much is it a $ qt. I see no reason not to use it. If the price is right I will switch to it this winter.

Don,
I see no reason NOT to use the Delvac. It is a good oil!

Dragracer,
I resent the fact you call Amsoil "Scamsoil"!
This Company has been in business for over 26 years. Much longer than ANY other synthetic oil manufacturer. Yet you are using "Redline" ATF, and it is made by a Company that markets their products the same way as Amsoil. Do you think Amsoil would be in business that long, and still be a scam?

I'll get off my horse now, but you realy struck a nerve here!

drag racer,

Why are you knocking Amsoil?

Problems or just don't like the name?

Good comment- I agree might be good stuff, might even be worth the money, but I have a warrantee so I will NOT extend drain intervals to 100K, and I do not want to change my religion for a motor oil. As built the engine in my truck will outlast my truck. Why would I want to bring the oil outside the engine and trust non factory plumbing with the lifeblood of the motor? The cost= several incidences of a bad plumbing connection on a filter or preluber pump destroying a 9,000$ engine. Benefit = extend the life of a 400-800k motor????

Peter,

I think your missing the point. Extended oil changes are good for the pocketbook and Mother Nature.

If you change your oil every 3-5k miles and use the cheapest oil you can find, the engine will live a LONG time.

Which "Mobil Oil" is approved for the DIESEL
Oil spec. noted in the owners Manual?? I havent been able to find any that indicates it is. I use "AMSOIL" because it is approved to the Specification and is synthetic, which i think is better than non-synthetic oils.

Gimme... Gimme... Gimme...

I just read up on the Mobil Delvac 1 . .

$17. 00 per Gal...

I NEED A COUPLE OF CASES SON!!!

From Whom do I order. . and/Or Where can I pick it up In CT... ???

This Looks Like the stuff I've been searching for!!

100% Synthetic is the WAY TO GO!!

I've worked on Aircraft for most of My adult life...
When The company switched to all synthetics. . I thought we would be out of buisness.

Oil seals that used to become brittle and break stayed supple and soft... Thick Black Tar that used to coat the insides of the pitch control assy's disappeared. . (burnt on oil from the high temps generated by a turbine after shut down when no air movement allowed the unit to "Cook Off". )

When the company went to 100% synthetics. . we were seeing units that had THOUSANDS OF HOURS ON THEM COME BACK LOOKING LIKE NEW!!!

NO B. S. !!!!

I have NO AXE to grind... I'm just a PROUD owner of a Cummins Dodge.

As Always. . Opposing Viewpoints Are Welcome.

I get my Mobile Delvac oil in Canaan Conn. The name of the place is John B. Hull. They stock a full supply of Mobile products. It's on Railroad St. (Rt. 7). Just past the little Dodge dealer called Brewer Bros. I went there about a month ago to get oil, made a stop at the Dodge dealer. It turned out to be an expensive day! Regards, bilford

Don,
Thanks for the lead, i had not been able to find anything local except "AMSOIL". Which i feel is a very good oil, it has been recomended by other oil manufacturers that i have emailed for oil info. I think that "Mobil" is also a good oil, and will be looking for a supplier locally for a cost comparison. I think that any synthetic oil rated for the Diesel spec will do a better job than conventional oil. I also feel that with Oil Analysis by a lab that extended oil change intervals can be obtained with any Synthetic oil and good filtering.
Just my . 02 worth, and again thanks for the lead.

Does anyone know the exact temperature range of the Delvac1? According to the D-C shop manual, the 5W-40 is good for anything below 0 degrees. Is this safe to operate in the winter where temperature could be at freezing?

While on the subject of oil, I was wondering if anyone on here uses the "Chevron Delo-400" (other than myself)and what is your opinion of this product. It was reccomended to me by a diesel repair shop and I have been using it a couple of years now.

Mobil Delvac 1®

Product Description

Mobil Delvac 1 Synthetic high performance diesel engine oil contains high-quality synthetic base stocks and a unique additive system. Itprovides outstanding high-temperature detergency and
all-temperature dispersancy, with optimized resistance to thermal degradation and oxidation, wear, and corrosion.

Mobil Delvac 1 carries an SAE 5W-40 viscosity rating. It has all the advantages of an SAE 40 weight oil without the higher oil consumption inherent in multigrade oils that use very light-mineral oil base stocks. Because synthetics have higher boiling points than conventional oils, Mobil Delvac 1 does not evaporate as readily in the high-temperature piston ring area of
turbo-charged diesel engines.

Mobil Delvac 1 has the same viscosity as most SAE 40 oils at the high end of the temperature viscosity scale. However, because of its higher viscosity index and unique molecular structure, it provides a better protective film at higher temperatures than conventional oils. Mobil Delvac 1 remains fluid at sub-zero temperatures as low as -54°C (-65°F) and provides rapid cold-engine
start-ups and warm-ups.

Mobil Delvac 1 can provide satisfactory lubrication at temperatures up to 100 degrees above the upper limit for conventional mineral oils. It is fully compatible with conventional heavy duty diesel and gasoline fleet engines. It also provides unsurpassed protection against soot related
viscosity increases in low emission diesel engines.

Mobil Delvac 1 has long drain capability and can be extended in service far beyond the builder recommended drain interval in both diesel and gasoline engines. Consult your Mobil representative for specific recommendations.

Mobil Delvac 1 will provide outstanding wear protection and deposit control in the most
demanding diesel engines of Cummins, Caterpillar, Mack, Navistar, Detroit Diesel, and others. It is balanced to provide optimum engine life until overhaul,in both high-loaded, thermally stressed
diesel engines and units operating at lower speeds in pickup-and-delivery service.

Mobil Delvac 1 exceeds the requirements of:
API CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF, SJ, SH
Mack EO-M Plus, EO-M, EO-L Plus
Cummins CES 20076, CES 20071
Detroit Diesel 7SE270
Volvo VDS
MTU/DDC Category 2
Caterpillar deposit performance
2. 0% distillation at 700°F

Applications

Mobil Delvac 1 is recommended for diesel- and gasoline-powered fleet vehicles, such as
over-the-road, off-the-road, truck rental, pickup-and- delivery, utility, and school bus fleets. Mobil Delvac 1 is capable of providing fuel economy benefits of up to 3% and more in heavy duty diesel engines, with as much as a 40% reduction in oil make-up in over-the-road service.

When Mobil Delvac 1 is used in an engine for the first time, no system preparation is necessaryother than proper draining and installation of a new filter. In an emergency, conventional oil can
be used as make-up for Mobil Delvac 1, but such mixing may lower the performance of Mobil Delvac 1. Do not dilute crankcase oil with gasoline or kerosene in cold weather. The diluent will not improve cold cranking and may have an adverse effect on the performance of Mobil Delvac 1.

In addition, Mobil Delvac 1 is recommended for extended drain performance in truck
trailer-mounted refrigeration units.

I have been using Delo 400 but can only get it in 15w-40, I live in Michigan and think that 15w-40 is a little too thick for winter. So I was looking at the Mobil Delvac 1 and I think that is what I will use. Looks like it is a year around oil. I was happy with the delo though and will go back to it if I don't like this oil.

Don, I bet Chevron and Rotella meet the sames specs. I don't know if they have a synthetic oil. I've been using Mobil because They're close by and they deliver. I also have good luck with it. They have good grease too. I'll have to ask and see if they have Dodge ATF. Regards, bilford.

DEWDO,
Delo 400 is a good oil! There are many good oils out there for the Dodge/Cummins Diesel.

By the way. DELO means Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil.

Lets look at a couple of tests of Engine oils.
One is the Shell 4-Ball Wear test, the other is the Noak Volatility Test.

Chevron DELO 400 in the Shell 4-Ball Wear Tests show it to have a wear scar Diameter of 0. 62 mm.

Shell Rotella T shows a wear scar of 0. 65 mm.

Mobil Delvac shows a wear scar of 0. 65 mm.

Cummins Premium Blue shows a wear scar of 0. 66 mm.

Amsoil 5W-30 shows a wear scar of 0. 39 mm.

Amsoil 15W-40 shows a wear scar of 0. 40 mm.

The Shell 4-Ball Wear Test is designed to evaluate the antiwear properties of lubricants. Smaller wear scar diameters are a DIRECT indication of wear protection(Friction Reduction)provided by a lubricant.

Improved wear protection results in several things.

1-Longer Equipment life.

2-Lower Maintenance costs.

3-Improved Fuel Economy.

4-Longer Oil Life.

Lets Look at Volatility(Evaporation/Volatilization.

Chevron DELO 400 14. 55 % Weight Loss.

Shell Rotella 17. 01 % Weight Loss.

Mobil Delvac 15. 49 % Weight Loss.

Cummins Premium Blue 15. 57 % Weight Loss.

Amsoil 5W-30 7. 8 % Weight Loss.

Amsoil 15W-40 7. 2 % Weight Loss.

Lower percentage of Weight Loss indicates an oil that is less prone to evaporation/Volatility at operating temperatures.

1-Less Volatile oils provides less oil consumption.

2-Less Deposits formation

3-Longer oil life

4-Stable Viscosity for low and high temperature wear protection.

5-Fewer Emissions.

Like I said, DELO 400 is a good oil, but in my opinion, there are better oils.

Best regards,

Wayne
