Question for you guys who travel with a DSS satellite TV dish. Is there an easy way to reaim every time you move, any tricks or other things that might help?

Bill, both trucks have DSS. On my FL-70 I use a $1,200. 00 automatic searching dish. Really sweet! But high $$$ Mounted to the roof on the sleeper. On my 2000, We just get the zip of where ever the truck is,and dial in in with the compess in regards to lat. & lon. I have seen a few with digital signal finders. I thought they said Camping world had them ????? I'm sure you will get a good idea from others here on the board. ..... But if you have an exta 1,200. 00 the auto seeking one is sweet. Mike

Bill,

I've got about 3yrs experience setting them up at locations around the globe #ad
The Zip Code data base works just fine. Mine is usually set up on an airport tarmac, so being level is not a concern. However, tree branches and other natural cover can weaken the signal. The biggest problem I have had is anchoring the dish down so the wind doesn't squirrel it around. I put two 10lb barbell weights together with a rope to keep it from sliding around on a smooth surface. Enjoy it!

If your a bottom end user like me, and have to set it up manually, here are a couple of tips.

First, Get and or modify an antenna mount that you can level acurately. That reduces the search to one axis instead of two.

Second, compasses are easily effected by electical currents and material containing iron. Move around and make several readings and get the best estimate of where to point the dish to begin with.

Use some means to listen to the tone from the receiver at the dish. I made an FM transmitter, but a baby monitor or a commercial transmitter work well. You can then move the antenna around the initial pointing angle and listen for the best signal tone.

Lastly, give up and use the cable. LOL

Hope that helps a little.
