Motorcycle Trip On The Pacific Coast Highway In May

No private vehicle travel in or out of Canmore is being permitted although the rumor here in the hotel where I'm staying is that RCMP is allowing very limited truck traffic in to to deliver groceries and other essential supplies. The westbound highway back to Banff has been blocked by a major mudslide since minutes after I passed through eastbound Thursday morning.

Earlier today the sky was clear, the sun was shining, and I wanted to be on the road so I suited up and got on the wing and rode down the street until I saw an RCMP patrol car. I made a quick U turn and followed him into downtown until he stopped. I asked him if RCMP would allow one lone Texas traveler on a motorcycle to slip past the check points and travel east. The officer told me no, if they let me pass they'd have to let everyone pass. ??????? The bottom line according to him is I might be able to travel east on Monday. Canmore, AB is a beautiful little Rocky Mountain resort town but I didn't really want to spend a week here.

Harvey head south 325 miles to Seeley Lake MT the weather is not as bad as in Cranston off and on sun for today and supposed to be sunny with chance of rain the next 10. Up here the chance of rain is nothing to torrential down pour. We will be gone but the key is under the Gnome Garden Statue giving the FINGER. If a little lady show's up with a LARGE BORE SHOTGUN TELL HER YOUR NAME FAST as she DOSENT WAIT LONG we will be back in a week from Monday NEED DIRECTIONS ? LET US KNOW!!!

Thanks, Gale. I appreciate the invitation but I'm determined to ride the Trans-Canada all the way across unless they roll up the highway. I'm hoping to get out of here in a day or two and continue my journey.

I received the news last night that RCMP was opening a route east running two way traffic on the westbound side of highway 1 so got out of Canmore early this morning. I'm in Swift Current, SK tonight.

Dang Harvey, slow down and smell the roses. Over 900 miles in two days doesn't leave any time to sample what Canada has to offer.

Gary, I've got a month to cover 9,000 miles with an occasional day off to reset my old body. I'm in Thunder Bay, ON tonight. Sault Ste. Marie, MI tomorrow night. Plan to take a day off in the Soo 0n Thursday to watch the ore carriers lock through. The Soo is one of my favorite destinations and one I visit just about every summer. After the Soo it's back into Canada and all the way to Nova Scotia.

Glad that everything is now going well. I'll monitor your progress as you get closer to Maine. I'll bet that there is huge lobster waiting for you in either New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. In Maine they may be a little smaller...

What is a legal size lobster?

The State of Maine has special laws that are designed to protect our lobster fishery for years to come. We use a special gauge to measure the lobsters carapace (body). There are both minimum and maximum size measurements. The minimum size is designed to make sure that all lobsters are mature enough to breed at least once before they are harvested. The maximum size limit is designed to protect the breeding stock. A minimum size lobster will weigh around 1 lb. , while a maximum size lobster will weigh between 3-4 lbs. The most plentiful, and most popular size of Maine Lobsters are 1 1/4 – 1 1/2 lb. each. If you are offered a smaller or larger lobster than this, you can guarantee it is not a genuine Maine Lobster.

Plan to leave Sault Ste. Marie, MI tomorrow early to cross back into Canada and continue east to Halifax. I wish all this wonderful rain was falling in Texas instead of wherever I travel. It has rained each day I've been in the Soo.

No, all I'm carrying is a cell phone camera and am never willing to stop long enough to take a photo. In this time of time of technology anyone can key a subject into a computer and see a better photo than I can take.
