but I can tell you I do need to double clutch sometimes to get into gear (sitting still).

Mine can be very stubborn to get into 1st gear at a dead stop.

I've learned to mitigate the problem by depressing the clutch, waiting a few seconds for the transmission to stop rotating, then engaging the gear.

WELL, now, after a few months behind me with the 1 oz or so of friction modifier added to the OEM 5600 lube, I can safely say what small degree of "catching" I had between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th, is now pretty much completely gone. That's especially welcome in our below freezing winter weather, where that tendency was at it's worse. Too bad it won't work as well for all NV 5600's...

I have 86,000 miles on the ome oil and never changed it. I love driving it I sorry to here that you have had problems with it. I don't plan on changeing it because the manual said that it is live time oil!! And I haven't had any trouble thank God. :):)

Gary - What LSD additive did you use?

I tried "Trans-X" made by BG products (?) that is available at most big parts houses... it didn't seem to make any change.

Steve, I used the stuff Ford sells for use in their truck differentials, also used their lube - since they use the same Dana 80 as my Dodge has - the lube works well in the differential, as I would expect, and the friction modifier seems to get the job done. I wonder if there is a potential compatibility issue if the proper matching FM isn't used in the lube it is compounded for? In my case, at least, it seems to work as it should in both the Ford differential fluid AND the DC transmission lube...

But the seemingly wide variation in lube tolerances with the 5600 sure is annoying for the guys trying to find a non-OEM lube that will give them the best shifting characteristics. Guess I am just one of the lucky ones. :D

Dude !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've not ran the factory fluid, but I'm not paying $19/quart for it either...

Does your 05 have a 5600 or a G56? Two different trans, and hard to tell from your comment which you have...

Man Steved what kind of people do you thing buy a truck like this?.

I think I know which transmission I have:rolleyes:

Mac:cool:

Chrysler defines "lifetime" as 100K. Warranty is 70K on drivetrain, so the sooner you break it, the sooner they'll sell you another one. :)

Oil will cost you about 40-50 bucks (synchromesh at Autozone), a new transmission 4000.

And you best hope that the place that trys to rebuild it can get it right after the 4th or 5th time!

There's a LOT of crud generated inside a transmission - especially in the first 20K miles or so as syncros and gears seat in - and keeping the lube clean inside a transmission is just as good and reasonable as it is in an engine... If you want it to live a long and carefree life! ;):D

I installed the Amsoil (MTF) Manual Transmission Fluid 5W-30 as it meets the Chrysler Specs. MS-9224 & MS-9417.

Did this on June 16th 2005. Shifts are very smooth, both winter as well as summer. Very little difference in shift quality between the two climates.

Amsoil lasted right around 10k before shifting degraded significantly... that was even with the added volume of the Fast Coolers...

Still running simple ol Penzoil Syncromesh in mine. Shifts fine (until the pilot bearing or hydraulics start messing up).

If more of these trannies were "out there" it should not be that hard for someone to come up with a double and triple cone synchro, or a cone with kevlar, rather than brass.

The NV5600 has double cone in the first two gears, and single in the rest. I think it should have had double in 3rd and 4th also.

The G56 has triple cone in the first two, and double in the rest.

The double cone has twice the synchronizing force, so you shift twice as fast (in theory at least).

5600 Trans Fluids

I just did my 100K maintenance and as part of that I changed my 5600's trans fluid. This is my 4th trans fluid change:

0K-17K Penzoil Syncromesh (stock)

17K-41K Penzoil Syncromesh - Shifted OK

41k - 76K Royal Purple Syncromax - 'natchier' shifting

76K - 99K Torco RTF - Good shifting, VERY Little brass shavings in the add on filter

99K to xxx I used Steved's Redline MTL/MTF blend: Shifts noticably BETTER! I'll check the filter in 25K and hope it shows the low wear like the Torco.

BTW, the Torco looked and smelled as new.

Put the Torco stuff in mine a few weeks back. After 2300 miles the past 2 days, still does not want to shift all that great when hot.

I found that my trans likes the slightly thicker fluids...

And my MTL and MTL/MT-90 mixes drain like new everytime... very little stuff on the magnet and the fluid is crystal clear...

The PZ fill netted me the most brass in the oil... one reason I refuse to go back to the PZ stuff...
