The bottom of the muffler on my 06, 2500, 5. 9L has rotted out as well as the next pipe downstream. Any thoughts on a replacement system? I'm looking at some entry level "performance" systems that promise a little power gain (not real important to me) but also a mileage improvement. Any input would be appreciated.

If yours has rotted out I assume you are are in salt country???

If so do yourself a favor and get a stainless steel muffler and tailpipe. My '06 lost the muffler at 4 years of age and the tailpipe at 5 years.

I went with the Magaflow system, it is loud but I bet I won't have to fool with it again.

No matter what system you pick make sure that it is stainless steel if you live where the roads are treated in the winter.

Also, post this again in the 3rd gen section, you will get a lot more responses.

Mike. :)

I am in salt country and also in the "wrong" generation section, just noticed that before reding your post. Thanks. Can you define loud, I really don't need the big diesel sound.

It's no so much the loud as the drone that you can get.

But my system is turbo back, if you go cat back it is not so bad.

No big increase in power with the 5" system but dropped exhaust temps while towing a good 150 degrees, that is what I really wanted anyways.

Plus a Mega Cab is the worst for drone, it is the length of the exhaust system coupled with a bigger interior space to receive the exhaust noises IMHO.....

Ditto. And a better muffler would help with the noise. My '03 is not really loud in the cab, but pretty loud outside with the Summit Racing SS exhaust system. I first mounted the muffler backwards so it would be a "little" loud... ... WHOA!! Big mistake!! Wayyyy too loud, so I reversed it and it's much better, now. The Mega cab noise is partially to the cab floorboard being more directly over the muffler, I think, too. Diamond Eye has a little better muffler, as does Flowmaster, but you pay the price... ...

You're really not going to see much, if any gains in MPG on a stock truck. Maybe a fraction if you go turbo back and take the cat off... ... . If all you want is to fix it, look around the muffler shops for a OEM take off... may can get it for the cost of putting it in... ... Just a thought.

Halbur, do yourself a big favor and call Source Automotive. You can get their number off their website:

Source Automotive

Rip Rook started the company building custom exhaust systems and his service is second to none. He's made exhaust systems for many people on this site that are nice and quiet (equal to or quieter than stock) but still give the performance gains of the bolt-on 4" systems. He sells those too, but for what you want I'd call him and talk to him directly. You'll almost certainly pay less with him vs. Summit.

I helped a young friend install a Magnaflow stainless steel turboback 5" system in his '05 CTD. The noise and especially the drone killed him. He reinstalled the cat for emission purposes here and feels it's still too loud.

Paul Fox @ OrangeMuffler.com - Welcome To Our Website! installed a splice-in Shuttleworth HD diesel muffler five yrs ago in mine. No drone and a reasonable sound level. I do have the regcab so it's the best for sound levels in the cab. I live by the ocean here, but zero issues with the exhaust system.

Yeah, it seems like the truck mufflers give the best sound reduction and still have good performance because they're a straight-thru design.

I just put a 4" diamond eye on my 93 it is loud and didn't fit well. We have a 2010 in the shop right now with a dpf deleted, 4" pipe all the way with a twister muffler on it. I like the way it sounds. Called flo-pro and they said they didnt have a cat back for my 04. 5 truck with the twister. It needs an exhaust now.

I'm real happy with my MBRP stainless system. Easy install, everything fit perfect. Lifetime warranty. One of the hanger rods weld broke. I e-mailed them a picture and they sent me a complete section of pipe.

MBRP is the best bang for the buck. My 4” T-407 stainless steel system cost less than $500. It sounds good (not too loud and no drone). I'm sure the other brands are very good too. Down here in Florida, my stock aluminized exhaust was still good after being 10 years old. The T-407 should last me a lifetime. In the salt belt, the T-407 will probably last many years. For a few hundred more dollars, you can get the T-304 exhaust and it will definitely outlast your truck. Both the T-407 and T-304 have lifetime warrantees. A friend and I installed it in a couple hours with basic hand tools. The hardest part was removing the old exhaust. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Agree with MBRP. Had an aluminized steel on my truck and being from the north (Salt belt), lasted about 5 years and that was it. Installed MBRP T-409 and sounds good. Hopefully it will last a lifetime. Heard that T-304 is too hard and cracks.
