$400 Exhaust Question?? Comments Please!

Horton Fan Clutch vs. Electric Cooling Fan

I've only had this turbo on my truck for a week with 600 miles logged on it. It is impressive and performs every bit as Piers said it would. The lag is minimal starting from a dead stop and nonexsistant when you punch the throttle from cruising. Shifting up through the gears, once you hit 1700rpm with some boost pressure this thing really spools and takes off! The top-end is incredible and more than makes up for any lag that it might have. With just running injectors for power, this thing really gets the boogie going hitting 26psi where my stock HX35/12 had to hit 33psi.

I've been doing all my comparisons with my box off, and I haven't been able to bark it... matter of fact, it didn't bark when I had the box fully cranked either. I tried an HX40 hybrid with an HX35 14cm exhaust housing and that barked very easy (barking its what kills 'em).

I've only spent one day with the box cranked up and again the top-end pull is what makes it great. EGT's?? All I can say is my cruising temps are the same... 500-600deg from 60-75mph. I don't know what my max egt's changed to with the fuel fully cranked, and I really don't care, that's not why I bought it. I bought it for the top end pull and that is what I got. Oo.

Has anyone else has installed this turbo on a 24v?

-Mike

I have ran one of these that i got from enterprise engine for over 2 years now. Never had any trouble unless you run it at over 50lbs of boost. This thing works great for adaily driver.

exhausted, Piers' new HX40 Super Turbo is BY NO MEANS the same HX40 sold anywhere else!

NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Right, what John said. This turbo just came out recently from Piers and it is not the same thing you can get anywhere else. He modifies it for better lower end, quicker spool-up, better oiling and it has a silencer ring (the ring you have to have with a Psycotty).

-Mike

How is it towing?

Lead footing to beat the V-8's is fun, but towing is really the I-6 forte.

When Piers builds something, I only expect WOW.

-John

I have had the Piers modified HX-40/18 on my truck since around Christmas and I just got the modified 16 housing on it tonight.

The turbo spools sooo much faster than the stock 18 I cant believe it.

I have 10psi before I really even throttle it. The truck feels like I had the old HX-40/12 Kwikspool on it. Much more fun to drive than the 18.

Honestly, I have picked up low end power and I cant tell a difference in top end at all.

Looks like the 16 housing will stay until the twins are born and installed. '

Thumbs up for this turbo. Piers you've got yourself a winner here.

JohnE,

I can't give any good towing results. I dragged around my usual 2600 lb equipment trailer this weekend which is nothing for these trucks, and the lag hardly felt any different than my stock HX35/12 when rowing through the gears from a stop. But I could tell there was less engine braking pressure.

Brian,

The 'ring' I'm refering to is the silencer ring. DD and Piers are the only two guys selling the HX40 with silencer rings, everyone else doesn't. I have a Psychotty air box on my truck... in other words, I have a big 4" hole cut in my cowl and I get alot of turbo noise. When you don't have a silencer ring and the Psychotty, the high-pitched turbo whistle is unbearable. You can't enjoy listening to music, carrying on a conversation, and long trips are annoying.

Don:

Good report!! I should have mine back from Piers

this week. Can you tell me what your "top speed"

is now? How does that compare to your top speed

with the "stock" HX-35/12 on there?

Thanks!

to remove or not that is my q

Oo. what about that silencer ring it seems to cover three cavities in the compressor inlet that would let in more air? any tests done ?

Mike R what you described in your first post of this topic is exactly what the turbo from Enterprise does. They been putiin em out for over 2 yrs now, not bashing Piers, but just the way you described it, sounds just like mine. Exhausted- is that you Dale?

Finally got my "Piers Modified HX-40 Turbo" installed along

with the ATS 3-piece manifold! All I have to say is WOW!!!

I agree 100% with what all of the other members have

already said about this turbo such as: drawson, Mike R. ,

Don M and others! What a difference from the "stock"

HX-40/16! The difference is VERY noticeable!!

Although I have not "gotten on it" hard yet (Piers'

suggestion and point well taken), I can already tell

you that I have no lag at all on the bottom end!!

As soon as I push down on the throttle the truck

takes off. In "stock" form I felt I had a small lag on

the bottom end which would "clear out" once I got

up to about 1600 RPM. Like "Mike R. ", I made a

"comparison" of my EGT's between the HX-35 and

this "Piers HX-40. " At a constant 70 MPH and turning

1750 RPM my EGT with the HX-35 was 600 degrees.

With the "Piers HX-40" the EGT is now 500 degrees!

Believe me, I need all the help I can get in that dept!!

This turbocharger runs smooth and the power is "right

there" with no hesitation from any speed. I will report

more as I get it "broke in" a little more.

Piers, my sincere thanks to you for a GREAT turbo and

for all your help and guidance "tips" for the install! Also

my sincere thanks to Roy Whaley for all of his hard work

on the installation of the turbo and manifold! And, for

putting up with all my questions!

going crazy!!!!

Ive ordered my PDRHX40w about a month ago and i cant wait to get it!Ive heard and read alot of great things about his turbo's which makes it all the more desired ,But i know good work takes time and I would rather wait and be patient for him to do his magic! :D

Pthomas:

You WILL NOT be disappointed when that turbo arrives!

I am so surpised at how quick mine responds as compared

to when it was stock! I know you will be happy with yours

OK here's the news flash...

Piers was the person who is responsible for the Holset HX40 adaptation to the Dodge Ram (I also believe Joe Donnelly played a development role in this). This came about several years ago or so while Piers was employed at BD. Several other vendors jumped on the bandwagon after Piers laid the groundwork for the reverse engineering to commence. After which, many different vendors decided that any old HX40 variant would work in our application. Price reductions based on a "lesser" HX40 variant ensued, with duped customers being caught in the middle trying to figure out why their new turbo wouldn't install as described by other TDR members and/or BD or DD customers. In addition, it was (Piers) BD that bankrolled a fair amount of company time (on the phone) with some of the customers who purchased their HX40 turbo from another vendor trying to figure things out or?

Adding to John...

Not only that, but these new units are coming straight from Holset with the custom built specs spcifically for Piers' rpm and oiling. They (Holset) said no one else is having the mods built into them this way.

The unit is still doing great. Now that I've had it on for a while, stop and go driving (lag) doesn't really seem to be any different than with the HX35. While taking off from dead stops, no one other than me wouldn't be the wiser of a turbo change by just riding or driving the truck. One way you can tell if you're getting a difference in lag is by the no-boost smoke, which is almost the same... that's how quickly it spools up.

Same injectors and Fueling box, I gained 26hp from just the turbo alone.

I know what you mean by QUICK spool-up Mike, my PDR HX35 Super Turbo makes 1 psi of boost right at idle! I can actually hear it while in gear (auto. /DTT 93% TC) at a stoplight! If you listen, you can hear the turbo whistle at idle, with a slight rise (in turbo whistle) when I take my foot off the brake pedal.

Got Lag?

Not Hardly!
