Competition First sled pull!

Competition Texas 12V goes 10.97

I used to drag race in my younger days. That was a while back. Dont remember even seeing a diesel truck on the drag strip back then.

For some reason I have decided to take my first new $40,000+ Cummins to the drag strip and see just what I can do.

Took it out stock for a baseline. Have so times to start with.

Any tips about how to launch, how to handle the auto trans shifting.

I have added aFe Magnum Force air intake and torque tube, Predator Stage II, and Saturday will have new high flow muffler.

I know that I need a converter and trans upgrade to do any real heavy launches for better times.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had never been to a dragstrip until a couple of months ago. Now I have been twice and ran 4 times each visit. Best times I got on the first visit was by letting the transmission do the shifting and launch in 2 wheel drive. Because of the ECM defueling I could only build about 9lbs of boost, so hard launches were not possible and I hardely lost traction. So if you launch and don't loose much traction 2 wheel drive launch is the way to go. Best I did was 14. 7 @ 91mph

Now on the second visit I had taken care of the ECM defueling problem and my first run I launched in 2 wheel drive (never again) and burned rubber for about 1/8 mile, ran a 17. 5 @ 95mph! Best I did that night was 13. 6 @ 98mph and that was 4X4 launch of course, with about 15-20lbs boost. I tried shifting manualy, locking out overdrive and got worse times than letting the transmission do the work. Don't forget if you launch in 4X4 to take it out when you get rolling.

diesel4power,

Thanks for the info. Those are very impressive times. Stock with 3. 73 gear and 315 tires could only do 16. 7 @ 81mph.

I am going to do my best to go Sunday evening and see what the mods will do.

I have a ways to go to get to your numbers though.

thanks again

John

Will it unlock out of 4x4 with that kind of load on it? T- case or axle ?What gains in et by do it? I tried 4x4 and left it in till end of 1/4 then took it out before turning of the track.

It will come out of 4X4 but its not instant. All I know is after I ran a 13. 6 I ran again and forgot to knock it out of 4X4 till I was running 80, then I knocked it out. The time I got that run was 13. 9. So I would say that you would shave off a few 10th's by shifting out early. I knock it out soon as it shifts to 2nd (when I remember)

It wont dissengage until the power is released off of the T-case and the axle/driveline.
