tried search, didn't come up with anything. '17 3500 Mega 4x4. Looking for info on oil filters, which one filters best. Last two oil/filter changes have been Stratapore 035/T-6. Oil is extremely black, appears like high soot. Question - Can you tell if the filter is plugging up? I change filters and oil at about the 6k-7k mark. Dash gauge says I can go much longer. Just for my own peace of mind, I would like to get more info on oil filter performance. Can anyone point me to some tech info on filters? Much appreciated!

Can't do better than Stratopore. I like the Kendall Super D XA oil. It passes Cummins heavy duty extreme use tests.

Kendall Super D XA controls soot well.

Wouldn't worry too much about the oil being black. It means the oil is doing it's job.

I use an amsoil bypass filter, which is a second filter that flows slower and filters down to 2 or 3 microns. You might consider a bypass filter for peace of mind.
 
Bypass filters will remove soot. Amsoil, Frantz and other brands will handle soot. Even if you let it get to the point of plugged, it will not hurt your engine in any way. The best thing you can do for your Cummins is add a bypass filter system.
I currently have 262,000 miles on my 2004. It has never been in for any kind of engine work. I do my own service work. Which includes a Frantz Filter. My Blackstone reports have been to keep doing what your are doing. I mainly change filters and add oil to make up what was in the filter. Last oil change was 60,000 miles ago. My oil looks great and is clean. Using Valvoline 15-40.
Clean Oil is more important than the brand.
 
No filter is going to remove soot. The micron rating would have to be so fine it wouldrestrict oil flow and plug almost immediately

No filter will remove ALL the soot. But it will get out enough soot to put your mind at peace and aleve any worries one might have about dirty oil.
 
That’s certainly not my experience. I had an amsoil bypass on my 04.5 for about 30,000 miles. The oil didn’t stay clean and an oil sample at 15,000 milesshowed so much soot loading Blackstone recommended IMMEDIATE oil and filter change. I removed the system and went to 5K oil changes. That truck now has over 400K miles on it. Your 04 doesn’t have the in cylinder egr that the 04.5 engines did which probably explains your good results.
 
FleetGuard Stratapore does a fine job indeed! A better filter would be the AMZ/OIL filter.

Which is (amsoil) actually made by Donaldson and is the same filter as dbl 7349.

The amsoil ones are cheaper if you have the preferred customer acct. Otherwise, the Donaldson can likely be found more cheaply.

IMO, If you've got an EGR valve, you've got black oil the minute you crank it after changing it. The new oils are formulated to keep the soot from clumping and getting filtered and plugging them. Roughly 20 micro I've read. But the right oil is the key.

As far as checking to see if it is plugged up, you could watch you oil pressure over time. Based on the digital calculated oil pressure gauge on the EViC, about 55 and you are bypassing. You'll never see more than (about) that. So if you are running 55 psi at an idle, you are obviously plugged up. Should see about 30 at idle and 48 or so while cruising down highway. My opinion.

I doubt the computer knows if the filter is bypassing..
 
Wrong! Pressure is measured AFTER the filter. In the main galley that feeds mains and rods. A plugged filter has no way to raise pressure readings. If anything it might lower them but it’s unlikely because of the filters own bypass valve. Especially at idle where flow is lowest . Then there’s the main relief. Then consider the fact that the oil pressure is a calculated number not actual. How would the ecm know thefilter is plugged?
Bad info is worse than no info. Please do some research before sending someone out with info that makes them look foolish if they speak with someone who actually knows the subject.
 
We have two 2012 5500's with over 14000 hours on them, Wix /Napa filters all the way and Schafer oil, every 10,000 miles. We do oil analysis regularly and have had 0 engine problems, never even changed an injector. Any quality filter and oil with required maintenance should be good to go.
Just my 2 cents, you know what they say about advice, it's worth what to pay for it.

May I ask (just curious) what is the oil change interval on the 2012?
 
I always start my post with IMO, (in my opinion). This and every forum is nothing but opinions. So have no fear about posting your opinion. If we couldn't post opinions, we'd have no post, ha. I do agree after much pondering, the calculated pressure of a plug filter would show a drop.
