I'm getting gauge's for Christmas. I think I would prefer a dash mount but am concerned about what a PITA it would be to to do the install. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestion on the relative merits of both locations.

gauge mounting

I have a triple pillar mount. Has not presented any vision obstruction as far as I am concerned. Plus... I think it looks better than gauges sitting on top of the dash. Have received many compliments from others (even non-diesel owners) about how good they look.

Attend a "meeting" with other local TDR'ers and sit behind the wheel of trucks with both set-ups..... we don't bite, and we're real proud to show off our mods.

You'll have to make the call... . BTW mine are dash mounted.

pillar mounted

mine are pillar mounted and a friend who saw them after just buying a new '02 said "I didn't know that was a factory option". ;)

In trucks I've driven with pillar mounts I've felt that the gauges were too much in my face, didn't like it at all. Mine are in the center below the ash tray.

I used the two guage pillar. Would have bought the three set with speaker if I had known about it at the time. My guages are Cyberdyne LED. Dimming is high and low and not variable like light bulbs. They were a little bright and distracting at night so I installed short 1/4" throw switches (Radio Squack) on each to turn on and off as needed. Works great. I also installed three more of the same using Auto Meter metal cups on the plastic cover that sits on the hump. All wires went in through the cover. Clean installation. Never a rider in the middle seat, so no problem with kicking them. Buy the Genos cup holder. Works great.

There is another option for dash.

The Rod Pod. Not sure who is selling it.

Somebody posted a picture of it either here or on NW Bombers.com

gauges

have westach combo egt /boost ,dual temp , fuel pressure in three pillars mount. look like factory installation. love um.

I have both the dash and the pillar mounts. I don't like the pillar gauges at all. You must refocus from the road to read them. The pod on the dash allows a quick glance to see the pointers without ever leaving the road. I have also found that on sharp, winding roads, the pillar mount obstructs some vission. Finally, the pod guages are actually easier to route the wires to than the pillar. Both methods run the wire bundle up the left side of the dash (below the pillar). The bundle then gets pushed down between the dash and the windshield out of site. Real easy.....

I have the pillar 3 gauge mount. I did get the dash mount assembly but after checking out the installation (including trying to hook them up) I scrapped that idea. I also have a dash cover which would need to be modified and the windshield is hard enough to clean without a dash mount sticking up in the middle of it. Everybody has an opinion, no to a dash mount is mine.

I have both dash mounted (2-boost and egt) and pillar (rear end and trans) mounted gauges. I am 6'3 tall so neither gauge setup ( there is a transfer flow gauge right next to dash gauges) restricts my vision. I prefer the pillar mount-it looks cleaner. This weekend I will be installing a triple pillar mount in my 99. Fuel pressure before and after filter and a spare hole. The TST PMax 9 has boost, egt and trans temp built in it and its mounted where they suggest-velcroed to the dash overhang between the ac controls and speedo. :p

I like the dash mount on mine, have a triple mount. Little bro has pillar and likes his. Get the ones you like, wiring is not a big deal for either.

Both!

I have a pillar mounted Boost/EGT and a dash mounted ( in cubby hole) mounted FP. I like them both. Pillar is mounted low enough(almost touches the dash) that it is not am obstruction and I can get a lot of info at a glance. The cubby hole kinda keeps the inside looking more "stock" and cleaner IMO. Best bet would be sit behind the wheel of a truck with pillar and then dash and see which one u like better.
