Plasma or LCD TV?

Need some input on which is better. Am planning on using this years bombing money to get a new TV instead. Heard somewhere that the screens only last for about 5 years but don't remember witch one. The prices have finally come down and Costco has some nice Phillips.

The plasma screens are the ones you heard about that last only 5 years. That's only partially true. A plasma screen will gradually lose brightness from the moment it's first turned on. Depending on use, it could be down to as little as 50% brightness by 5 years. They also suffer burn in (we have some at work that are burned in).



I have an LCD projector. I bought it because it doesn't suffer from burn in and doesn't get dimmer over time. I also like DLP. In the store the DLP's look MUCH brighter than the LCDs, but sitting alone in my living room with nothing to compare it to my LCD looks perfect.

Plasma has a superior picture, the new 8th and 9th generation screens have a 60k hour life expectancy, the color separation is better on plasma and the blacks are blacker. If you are looking at Costco the Panasonic HD 50" is a very good deal, and you cannot beat Costco's warrantee. If you read any of the AV forums the Panasonics are generally considered the best for a decent mid level HD TV. The latest 50" Panasonic is the the TH-50PX60U, the 42" is is the TH-42PX60U, the previous generation have a 50 where the 60 is.

I have 42" Sony LCD. I really like it. I prefer LCD.

LCD here. I like it even though mine is just a Sanyo.

Prices have come down but on the LCD EDTV, not the HDTV. Be careful and read the labels.

I purchased the HDTV. They also carry a SDTV version. Problem is I still haven't updated my Directv DVR to an HD version. :{

Plasma screens have a considerably shorter life span and are prone to burn out. Get an LCD.

Looks like the LCD may be the way to go. Thanks for the feedback. Do not need it right away so I'm going to do some more research. Always helps to know as much as you can when you are going to lay down a couple grand on an item.

bought a 50" dlp a few months ago.

Best bang for the buck and if the projection bulb ever goes I can service it myself with instructions right in the owners manual.

skip the plasma go DLP. Oo.
